-UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
D. DONOVAN AND W. G. HALLMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA; SAID DONOVAN, FOR HIMSELF AND AS ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID HALLMAN, DECEASED,
ASSIGNOR TO HENRY J. VHI'IE.
COOKING-RANGE.
Specification of Letters PatentNo. 11,048, dated June 6, 1854.
To all fte/wan t may concern:
Be it known that DENIS DONOVAN, and VVITCHELL G. HALLMAN, deceased, now and late residing inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, did invent an Improvement in Cooking-Ranges, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact `description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things known before and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using the same.
Our invention consists in certain improvements in cooking ranges, by which we make a compact and variable oven, and provide at the same time for the effectual escape of the fumes from cooking.
Figure 1, is a front elevation of the range.
Fig. 2, a vertical section from side to side. Fig. 3, a vertical section through the oven and fire chamber.
The main feature of improvement is the hinged top of the oven, A', provided with the projecting side pieces B, in which are flues, C', C', which when the hinged top is down in its place, fit over the side flues, A, A. These lines, A, A, are to be closed by the `side dampers, O, C, when the hinged cover is up, and then the draft may be in any of the modes common to cooking ranges. The'hinged cover has a double top, forming the flue D, from front to rear. This flue eX- tends back to the aperture E, from which the smoke will pass to the chimney pipe, F. The two side drafts passing up through the flues, C', C', unite in the common flue D, in the cover, and so pass out. On the under side of the cover is an aperture, P, for the escape of ,fumes into the flue D. The bottom` of the oven is formed by two boiler plates, K, L, which have each one of their edges beveled, as shown in the drawing, Fig. 3, so that they slide freely upon each other, and admit of the use of the two as one boilerplate without .removing either. The front one, for instance, directly over the fire, may be used, and thenthe draft may pass directly up through the space left by` the removal of the back one, and into the flue' space M, or the front one may be pushed back, and allow the draft to pass directly into the Hue N. The hinged flue cover and the separable boiler plates form together a compact variable oven, and boiling and roasting chamber of great convenience and efliciency.
What we claim as our invention is- 1. The hinged flue cover, consisting of the hinged cover A; side pieces B; flue spaces O; top flue D, in combination with the valves or dampers C.
2. Also, in combination with the hinged cover and the valves C, the arrangement of the aperture P, for the escape of fumes from cooking.
3. Lastly, we claim the sliding boiler plates in combination with the hinged cover and valves or dampers, O, C.
