IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 528, dated December 20, 1837.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEssE HUTCHINSON, Jr., of the town of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking- Stoves, called Hutchinsons Improved Cooking-Stove, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.

The general construction of this'cookiugstove, as will be seen by the annexed drawings, resembles, externally,the common cooking-stove now in use. a

The nature of my improvement consists in the use and application of a vertically-moving damper or regulator, A, at the rear of the fire-chamber B, and moving in gains or grooves formed on the front of the back plate, 0, by means of a lever, D, turning on a pin, E, inserted into the rear side of said plate 0, one end of the lever coming under a projection or pin F from the face of the regulator, by which it is raised, the other end of the lever being raised or lowered by a notched rod or handle, G, attached to it by a joint, and projecting through the side plate of the stove, said notches being for the purpose of holding the regulator at any desired position. This regulator is designed to open or close an aperture, H, in the back plate of the fire-place to any degree required, for changing the direction of the heat and smoke, either directly into the flue, or by first causing it to pass entirely around the oven when, required to be heated, and then into the flue, the regulator in the latter case being raised, so. as to close the ap erture before mentioned, while at the same time two side apertures, I I, are opened, the regulator having a projecting cap, K, on its upper edge for directing the heat toward the front of the stove and retaining it in the fireplace a greaterlength of time than if the regulator should be without thecap; also, in the use and application of a horizontally-sliding damper, L, in combination with the beforedescribed regulator, moving in gains or grooves on the top ofthe oven by means of a rod or. handle, M, extending through the back plate of the stove, for the purpose of opening or closing the side of the flue N toward the oven, in order to cause the smoke and heat to pass over or under the oven, as desired. Likewise in the use and application of two swinging doors, 0 O,in combination with the before-described regulator and damper, one placed on each side of the stove, for the purpose. of directing the heat and smoke under the boiler to the right or' left, as desired, or to regulate the draft of the stove. I

Now, all that I, the said JEssE HUTOHIN- SON, Jr., claim as my invention, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent,consists in The particular mode in which I have combined and arranged the above-named dampers with that marked L, and with the respective flues, so as to constitute a stove of the special construction herein described.
