JOHN A. SUNDQUIST, OF GEORGETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
TOY WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914.
Application filed December 12, 1913. Serial No. 806,227.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. SUNDQUIST, a former subject of the Czar of Russia, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Georgetown, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Wagons, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in toy wagons and has for its object the production of a toy wagon which will be ornate in appearance, and which will be adapted to afford considerable amusement by reason of the peculiar arrangement and mounting of figures adapted for rotary and vertical movement when the wagon is drawn along the ground.
A further object is the production of a device as mentioned which will be of simple and durable construction and not adapted to readily becoming inoperative.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a toy wagon embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the wagon, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on line zcm of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a platform 1 which is mounted upon wheels 2, said wheels being secured to the respective ends of axles 3 which are mounted in suitable bearings provided at the sides of said platform. Arising from the upper side of said platform are bearing brackets i in which are rotatably mounted transversely extending shafts 5 and 6, said shafts being arranged directly over the axles 3, as illustrated. Provided at the ends of the shafts 5 and 6 are pinions 7 which mesh with gears 7 secured to the inner sides of wheels 2, the arrangement being such that, when the wagon is drawn along the floor or ground, said shafts will be rotated.
Rigidly secured in and arising from the platform 1 are posts 8 upon which are mounted for free vertical and rotary movement figures 9 and 9, saidfigures being of any desired ornate and amusing appearance, but preferably in the form' of bears. The figure 9 which is arranged at the rearward end of the platform supports a horizontally disposed bar 10 in its forepaws at the ends of which are supported smaller figures 11 also preferably in the form of miniature bears.
Each of the figures 9 and 9 is secured at its lower end to a bevel gear 12, the gears 12 meshing with bevel gears 13 fixed to the shafts 5 and 6, the arrangement being such that when said shafts are rotated the figures 9 and 9 will be simultaneously rotated. The gears 13 are eccentrically arranged upon the shafts 5 and 6 so that in the rotation thereof, as just mentioned, the gears 12 and hence the figures secured thereto will be moved vertically at the same time as the same are rotated. At the upper ends of the posts 8 are provided pennants or flags 14: which constitute stops to prevent displacement of the figures 9 and 9 in the event of the wagon being over-turned.
Provided centrally in the shaft 6 is a crank 15 upon which is loosely mounted the forward end of a figure 16 also preferably in the form of a miniature bear. The rearward end of the figure 16 rests loosely upon the upper side of the platform, the arrangement being such that, upon rotation of the shaft 6, the figure 16 will be actuated in a manner to imitate a trotting or galloping bear.
The entire arrangement is neat and pleasing and will afford considerable amusement for children. The arrangement is simple and economical in construction and hence may be manufactured at a low cost.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy wagon comprising a platform; wheels supporting said platform; a shaft rotatably mounted in bearings provided on said platform; an operative connection be tween said Wheelsand said ishaftyia'posti. arising from said platform; a figure mounted on said post for free vertical and movement; a bevel gear on said shaft; and a; bevel gear having: awvertical axiscon'nec'te'd with said figure and meshing vith gnd g est ing upon said first mentioned gear, said,
