UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ERNEST H. WOELFFEL, OF POINT PLEASANT, VEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO WEST VIRGINIA MALLEABLE IRON CO., 0F POINT PLEASANT, WEST VIRGINIA.
CORNER-BRACKET FOR BED-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 23, 1914.
Patented July 21, 1914. Serial No. 833,966.
To all to/0m t may concern.' l
e it known that I, ERNEST H. WOELFFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Point Pleasant, in the county of Mason and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful CornenBracket for Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bed springs and more particularly to a corner casting or bracket for receiving the ends of the side rails.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character whereby the springs may be adjusted 0r tightened after the side rails are placed in the sockets of the casting or bracket.
A further object is the provision of means for using the side rails now in ordinary use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in- Vention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the side rail being placed in the socket. F ig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the parts assembled. Fig. 5 is a detail of the plug for the end of the side rail.
In the drawings the numeral l indicates a bracket on the lower end of which is formed an integral socket 2 and on the top end of which is secured the angle iron end piece 3 of the spring frame to which is secured the spring fabric 4. The socket 2 is formed with opening 5 and the end of a sleeve 6 having the interiorly threaded eX- tension 7 is received in the socket and the extension 7 passes through the opening 5.
The numeral 8 indicates a side rail of the ordinary construction; used in the frame work of the bed spring, and a plug 9 is in serted in the end of the rail. The end of the side rail is adapted to be received in the sleeve 6 and a screw l0 is threaded in the end of the sleeve and engages the plug in the end of the side rail.
In manufacturing bed springs consideretroub increase the distance therebetween to insert the opposite end of the side rail. After the wire has been so stretched it is with great diliiculty that it is finally tightened sufiiciently to sustain the necessary weight. It will be noted that in the ordinary construction of spring it is necessary to stretch the springs or fabric the same distance as the Applicant has overcome the jection -by providing the sleeve adapted to enter the socket in the'bracket stretched only to such an extent as the length of the socket member. It will thus be seen that by having the sleeve of greater length or spring. sleeve in the socket the adjustment or tightening is secured by turning the screw l0 which engages the plug in the end of the side rail.
Having thus described the I claim as new and desire to ters Patent is 2- l. The combination with the side rail of a bed spring, of a bracket having an integral socket, a sl and adapted to receive the end of the side rail, and an adjusting screw passing through the end of the sleeve and engaging the end of the side rail.
2. The combination with a hollow side rail invention what secure by Leteeve received in the socket 9 0f a bed spring, of a plug inserted in the In testimony that I claim the foregoing end of the rail, a bracket having an integral as my own, I have hereto afixed my signasocket, a sleeve received in the socket and ture in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
adapted to`receive the end 0f the rail, and an ERNEST H. WOELFFEL. adjusting screw passing through the socket Witnesses:
and sleeve and engaging the plug in the SELINA VVILLsoN,
side rail. I. E. SIMPSON.
