T0 all whom it mag/ concern Be it known that I, HARRY DILYooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a-n Improvement in Locked-Cop-Tube Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifica-tion, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.l
rlhis invention relates to an apparatus especially designed for use with sewing machines and the like, to prevent loss of thread by the removal of partially exhausted rolls of threads and more particularly silk thread from the spindles on which they are mounted. To this end, the spindle carrying'the roll of thread is mounted on a post extended from a suitable support, and said spindle is locked on saidpost against removal by unauthorized persons. IThe post may be attached to a base plate which is capable of being fastened to machines now built, and a cap plate is provided to conceal the fastening 1neans,'which is locked by means of a sleeve retained on the post by the spindle. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

lnthe presentinstance, one embodiment of the invention is shown, which is espe-` cially designed for use with sewing ma` chines employed in factories, which are supplied with thread and especially silk threadl y the roll, and prevents the ythread from befrom a roll a wound upon a cop or tube l).
The tube or cop Z; 1s mounted on a spindle c provided at one end with a head Z and at its other endwith 'a hole e, through which is t extended an upright post l0 extended from .a base plate 12, which is designed to be secured as by screws 13 to the head 14 of a sewing machine of known construction and such as now commonly used in factories. The spindle e is secured in xed relation to the post 10 by a set screw 16. Provision is made for locking the cop tube spindle c chine, by a cap plate or'bar 20, which is pivctedat one end as vat 22, to a plate o-r bar 23 riveted to or forming part of the base plate, and has its other end providedl with a slot 24, see Fig. 5, which forms arms 25, which straddle the post 10 and upon which rests the lower end of a metal tube or sleeve 27, which is fitted loosely on the upright post 10 and is retained thereon by the spindie c. The metal sleeve 27 may he cut away at its upper portion as at 28, so as to enable the end of the cop tube to be extended close up to the upright post 10.
The spindle c is locked on the post 10 by means of, a locking device, which is passed through a hole 30in the post 10 near the upper end thereof and above the spindle c. In the present instance the locking device is shown as a padlock 31, whose hasp 32 is passed through the hole 30 in the post 10. The sleeve 27 'serves al two-fold purpose, in that it serves as a support for the spindle c and relieves the set screw 1G, and also serves as a'lock for the cap plate 20.` The set screw 16 serves to keep the spindle 0 from turning .on the post 10. The cap plate 20 prevents accessto the screws 13 or other means by which the base plate 12 is fastened to its support, thereby preventing thel device being bodily removed. The base plate 12 may and preferably willl be provided with a second post 35, which is providedwith an eye 36 for the passage of the thread 37, and which supports a tension device 38 of usual or known construction.` The base plate 12 may also be provided with a third substantially short-'post 40,'which serves as a stop for the thread afs'it is unwound from coming Vtangled up with the tension device.
The apparatus herein shown is adapted to be secured to sewing vmachines now used in large numbers, in factories and like places, and is readily applied by tapping into the head of the machine, suitable holes 41 for the recept-ion of the screws 13 which can be screwed into said holes, after the cap plate 20 has been turned back so as to uncover said holes. After the base plate 12 has been secured to the machine head 14, the cap nro.
plate 2O is turned down so as to cover the screws as represented in Figs. 3 and 5, the sleeve 27 is then slipped over the post 10, the spindle c with the roll a thereon is then slipped over the post 10, and the hasp 32 is passed through the hole 30 and locked by a suitable ley (not shown). lThe spindle c is then turned so as to bring it above and into the plane of the base plate, and is then secured against turning on the post l0 by the set screw 16. lVhile the spindle c is locked on the post 10, the roll a of silk thread can not be removed from the spindle c by the operator or any other unauthorized person, and as a. result, a very considerable saving in silk is obtained for the manufacturer, and the temptation for the operative to waste material by removing a roll of the silk thread before it has been used up, is avoided.
In the present instance, the base plate 12 is shown as separate from the machine, so that it can be applied to machines now in use, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as it is evident that in manufacturing a new machine head let, the post 10 may be cast integral therewith, in which case the base plate 12 and cap plate 2O would be dispensed wit-h, and the lock for the spindle c alone retained.
The head 14: of the sewing machine forms one form of support for the device, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as the post 10 may be secured to any form of support, such as a bench, wall or upright, in proximity to the sewing machine. Furthermore, it vis not desired to limit the invention to the use of a. padlock as a lock for the spindle 0.
Claims:
l. In an apparatus of the character described, a base plate provided with holes for the reception of screws by which the base plate is fastened to a support, a post extended from said base plate and provided with a hole, a cap plate hinged to said base plate and provided with arms which straddle said post, said cap plate covering the screw holes in the base plate, a sleeve loose on said post and bearing on the arms of said cap plate, a spindle for the roll of thread mounted on said post, said spindle having at one end a head and near its other end a hole for the passage through it of said post, a locking device extended through the hole in the said post, and means for securing the said spindle in fixed relation to said post, substantially as described.
2. ln an apparatus of the character de scribed, a base plate, means for securing the base plate to av support, a cap plate to cover said means, a post extended from the base plate and provided with an opening through it, a spindle for a` roll of thread mounted on said post, said spindle having at one end means for retaining the roll thereon and at its other end a hole for the passage through it of said post, a sleeve on the said post to support said spindle and to lock said cap plate, and a locking device for said spindle extended through the hole in the post, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a base plate, means for securing the base plate to a. support, a cap plate to cover said means, a post extended from said base plate, a. sleeve on said post to lock said cap plate against removal, a spindle extended from said post and removable therefrom and cooperating with said sleeve to retain it on said post, and means to lock said spindle on said post, substantially as described.
4f. In an apparatus of the character described, a base plate, means for fastening it to a support, a cap plate to cover said fastening means, a post extended from said base plate, a spindle mounted on said post and extended therefrom at an angle thereto, means interposed between said spindle and cap plate to lock the latter, and means to lock the spindle on said post against removal by unauthorized persons.
5. In an apparatus of t-he character described, a base plate, means for fastening it to a support, a cap plate to cover said fastening means, a post extended from said base plate, a sleeve mounted on said post to lock said cap plate, a spindle mounted on said post beyond said sleeve and extended from said post at an angle thereto, and means to lock said spindle on said post against removal by unauthorized persons, substantially `as described.
