Description

l; r. l.
tntr geen @anni effin',
Letters Patent No. 110,392, dated December 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STUFEING-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW J. Pnnseo'lr, of Oatawissa, in t-he county of Columbia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stulng- Boxes; and do hereby declare that the followingr is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined stuiinigbox and gland, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2, a plan view of my invention.
A represents a stuing-box and gland having two necks, Gand B.
The neck O serves as a gland for the stuliing-box D upon the 'steam-chest X, while the neck B serves as a stufing-box for the gland E. A
Inside of the-gland C is an oil-chamber, which is supplied with oilat the oil-cup F.
Opposite this oil-cup there is a thumb-screw, N, opening into the oil-chamber a, for the purpose of letting out any sediment that might collect in the same.
H H represent studs on the steam-chest, to hold the gland A in placc,.and on this are other studs 'l T, to hold the gland E in place when packed.
L is the valve-stem passing through the glands A and E.
lhis device allows of packing iu two places, at B and D, with the oil-chamber between them, which keeps the steni oiled and the packing soft.
Havingl thus fully described my invention,
YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V rIv'he arrangement of the oil-chamber a between the two stuing-broxes D and B, and provided with inlet F and outlet N substantially as and for the purposes herein set. forth. I.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of February, 1870.
' A. J. PR-ESCOTT.
