SECTIONAL METAL STACK-COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Metal Stack-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable covers for hay grain, and other farm products to protect them in the field against the elements.
My invention consists of a plurality of corrugated roofing sheets detachably secured together with overlapped side marginal and end portions with the overlapped portions spaced to provide for ventilation, whereby the gases arising from the products may have ready exit and thus prevent sweating and spontaneous combustion; and my invention consists further in the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sectional portable roof serving as a cover for a hay stack; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the overlapped portions of two adjacent sheets; Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the sheet fastening means; Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the weight attaching means; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sheets.
The stack cover is composed of a series of sheets 1, preferably corrugated for the purpose of strength, and formed on an arc in order to facilitate the shedding of the ele ments from the roof. Each sheet is provided with a perforation 2 at its corners in which is secured an eyelet 8, the purpose of which is to reinforce the opening 2, said eyelet terminating on each side of the sheet in an enlarged boss 4 which serves not only to increase the be'aring surface for the pins which connect the sheets together, but also serves as a spacing element, whereby the overlapped marginal portions of the sheet are spaced from each other to provide a vent therebetween for the ready escape of gases arising from the products under the cover. lapping sheets, the legs of which are bent down on top of the sheet, thereby securing the sheets together through their overlapping marginal portions. The elongated head 6 depends from the under side of the cover and is adapted to engage the products covered and thus serve as a detent to assist in holding the cover against sliding movement. The elongated head of the cotter pins at the eaves of the cover serves as the means for suspending the weight carrying links 7, weights 8 being secured to the lower end of said links. Similar links are also placed at each end of the roof or cover.
It has been found very beneficial to cover farm products such as hay, etc, inasmuch as when covered it retains its appearance and is therefore more salable and at a higher figure than uncovered and dull hay.
Une of the material advantages of my improved construction is that by reason of the vents formed by the bosses at the corners of the sheets the products covered by the cover will not sweat and the liability of spontaneous combustion is reduced to a minimum, inasmuch as the natural gases arising from the covered products finds ready exit through said vents and is thereby prevented from accumulating under the cover.
What I claim is A portable metal stack cover comprising a series of independent corrugated arcuate roofing sheets overlapped along their side marginal edges, the ridge sheets overlapping the eaves sheets at their ends, each sheet having openings through each corner, bosses extending from each side of the sheet around the said corner opening and serving as a spacing member to space the sheets apart at their overlapped portions to provide vent spaces therebetween; and a pin passing through said openings respectively, and securing the sheets together, an elongated head extending from said pin and serving as a detent to assist in holding the cover against motion.
