IMPROVEMENT IN BRAIDING-GUIDES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. ll0,37-1, dated December 20, 1870.

To all whom it may concer-n:

Be it known that I, ALBERT KOMP, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Braid-Guide for Sewing-Machines; and [do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part otl this specification, in which drawings- Figure 1 represents a sectional front view oi' this invention as applied to a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a detached plan ofthe guide. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement, in the throat-plate of a sewing-machine, ot' a slot extending from one end of the throat-plate to the throat, and composed ot' aat part running parallel, or nearly so, with the surface of the throat-plate, and of anarrow slit extend- --ing from said tlat part up to the surface of the throat-plate in such a manner that the wide part of the slot forms the guide for a braid, which can be readily and conveniently crowded through the narrow upright part of said slot, and by these means a braid-guide is obtained which is exceedingly simple and convenient in its operation and construction, requiring no extra part to be attached tothe sewing-machine, and which does not in any way interfere with the ordinary functions of the sewing mechanism.

`ln the drawings, the letterA designates the throat-plate ot'a sewing-machine,which is situated below the needle, being inserted into the cloth-plate of the machine in such a manner that one or both ends thereof are iiush with the edge of the cloth-plate or with that of an elevation rising from said cloth-plate, as may be desirable. From the throat a of said throatplate extends an inverted-T-shaped slot, b, in a direction opposite to that in which the feed lakes place, and clear out to the end of said throat-plate, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, the shape of the slot being best shown in Fig. 4. By inspecting these iigures it will be seen that the narrow upright part of said slot extends up to the surface of the throat-plate, so that a braid can be readily crowded down through said part into the hat horizontal part of the slot, which latter part forms the guide for the braid. From the side of the throat oppositey the T-shaped slot extends a channel,c,gradu ally diminishing in depth from the throat up for the purpose of preserving an even surface ofthe work under the presser-foot of the sewing-machine. The vertical portion of the T- shaped slot, which is made to open on the face ofthe plate, permits the ready introduction ot' the braid sidewise,which not only affords ready means of inserting the braid into the guide, but holds it in position. By taking hold ot' the braid with two hands and stretching it out over and then depressing it on the throatplate said braid can be readily forced down through the upright portion ot' the slot b, and after having passed through this part ot' the slot the braid naturally spreads in the tlat horizontal part thereof, which part forms the guide for the braid during the operation ot' sewing.

This braid-guide is very simple inits construction. It requires no eXtra part to be attached to the sewing-machine, and it does not in the least interfere with the ordinary functions ofthe sewing mechanism.

Itis obvious that the narrow upright part of'the slot might be made inclined or curved without changing the result.

l am aware that extra plates have been hitherto employed, which plates are made to be removed from the face of the throat-plate in. order to introduce the braid in the guiding-slot, and are thenreturned to their iirst position to hold the braid in said guiding-slot. Such I do not claim; but

What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The th roat-plate A,formed in one piece with the inverted-T-shaped slot b, having the vertical portion thereot' opening on the face of said plate, and the horizontal portion communicating therewith below the face, all as set forth, for the purpose described.
