Description

(No Model.)
H E. T. THOMAS.
ATTACHMENT HOLDER FOR- SEWING MACHINES.
No. 277,083. Patented May 8,1883.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDDY T. THOMAS, OF NEW "YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHMENT-HOLDER FOR SEW ING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,083, dated May 8, 1883.
Application filed February 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDDY T. THOMAS, of New York city, county, and State, have invented an Improvement in Attachment-Hold tachments in place'with relation to the feed and needle-hole or throat-plate.
In my invention I provide the attachment-a hemmer, binder, or whatever it may be-with a bent arm, and the shuttle-raceway coveringslide with a slot, and the said slot and arm are so-located with relation to the bed of the machine that the arm comes between the under side of the said slide and a shoulder of the bed-plate, so that the slide and the shoulder co-operate to hold the arm of the attachment at its upper and lower sides, thus obviating the employment of the usual screw. By placing the slot and arm at the extreme edge of the shuttle-raceway covering-slide the under side of the latter, immediately above the path of the shuttle, is entirely unobstructed.
Figure 1 represents a sufficient portion of the bed of a sewing-machine, shuttle-raceway covering-slides, and throat-plate to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the bed of the machine; Fig. 3, a section on the dotted line 00 .70; Fig. 4, a plan view of the attachment removed from the slide, and Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. l on line y y.
The bed-plate A, needle-hole or throat-plate B, feed 0, and plate Dare all as usual in machines using shuttles.
The shuttle-raceway covering-slide E, having its edges fitted into grooves in the raised parts A of the bed-plate, is slotted at a, and notched at its inner end, as at b, to receive the arm G, and flange c of the arm H of the attachment 1, (shown as a hemmer, but which may be a hinder or any other attachment usually secured to the bed-plate-by a set-screw.)
The parts A of the bed are grooved, as at 2 3, to receive and guide the beveled edges of the slide E, and near the groove 3 the bed is cut away to form a groove, (1, into Which the side edge, 4, (see Fig. 4,) of the arm G fits and rests, as in Fig. 3, the wall of the bed-plate at the groove d and the under side of the slide E serving to act upon the upper and lower sides of the said arm to hold the attachment in place.
I do not broadly claim the arm or shank 0 an attachment entered through a slot'in the shuttle-raceway covering-slide, but am aware that such a device held in place by an extra plate or button is old.
I claim- The covering-slide'and the bed of the machine, provided with the groove d, combined with the arm of the attachment, inserted in the groove d and between the bed and the said slide to hold it in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
