Description

E. W. THUMB. GABTON. APPLICATION FILED 001.1,,1913.
1,103,708. Patented July 14,1914- I BY I v DRIVE Y8 EUGENE mammals, OF CHICAGO, rumors.
. CARTON.
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Carton, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in cartons, and has for an object to provide an improved structure in which the end is locked in place without the use of additional material in the construction thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carton which is provided with a tu1'ned over end portion and suitable flaps, the turned-over end portion having a notch between the remaining body part thereof and the flap so as to allow the flap to spring beneath the adjoining flaps, thereby presenting a locking structure.
In carrying out the object of the invention the carton or box may be made of any desired shape, and provided with a pair of flaps extending fromthe side of the box W. THoMn,
across the end, and an end member formed.
with a body and a side flap, the side flap being notched at end member, whereby said side flap is adapted to spring beneath the remaining flaps so as to lock the end properly in place.
In the accompanying draw1ng:-Figure 1- is a plan view of a blank from which the box is formed; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed perspective view of one end of the carton; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the carton in a closed position; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on line, 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral 1 indicates e body of a boxor carton which may be 0 any desired size or shape. The ends of the carton are made similar so that the description of one will apply to both. From Fig. 2 it will be observed that the sides are provided-with extensions or side flaps 2 and'3, which are designed to be folded over the end in the usual manner, and the back of the box is provided with an extension 4 forming an end member which merges into the front flap 5. At the juncture between end member 4 and'fiap 5 notches 6 and 7 are provided. One edge of the notches, namely,
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 1, 1913. Serial No. 792,772.
the juncture thereof with the Patented July 14, 1914.
edge 8, extends along the continuation of edge 9, while the opposite edge 10 is at an angle thereto, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Slight variations in this cut may be provided though this particular form has been found desirable as it allows the extreme ends 11 and 12 of flap 5 to slightly bow or project beneath the side flaps 2 and 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, whereby theend is locked against accidental opening.
In assembling the box or carton the same is assembled in the usual manner, and as soon as the flap 5 is forced in position it naturally'moves slightly 50 as to permit the edges 10 of the notched portions of flap 5 to properly interlock with the flaps 2 and 3. In this way no additional paper or cardboard is necessary to provide locking means and in fact the amount of paper is lessene by the small amount removed when moving the notches 6 and 7. It will also be noted that these incisions do not materially weaken the carton but the flap catches very readily and adjusts itself without any effort at all other than that needed to push it in place.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
In a carton of the class described, a pair of side flaps at the end, and an endmember provided with a front flap, said end member being adapted to extend entirely across the carton so as to cover the end of the member being adapted to-be inserted into the carton at the edges of the side flaps, said front flap being notched at each, end adjacent the juncture between the front flap and the end member, whereby when said last mentioned flap is forced into the carton the ends thereof will engage the side flaps and lock the entire end of the box'against self opening.
In testnnony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v EUGENE W. THUMB. Witnesses:
