VERTICALLY-ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led August' 14, 1913.
Patented July 14., 1914.
Serial No. 784,725.
This invention has relation to hinges and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a hinge the leaves of which may be adjusted with relation to each other `in order that a door which is supported by the hinge may be raised or lowered at an edge portion in order that the door may fit snu ly in its frame. It frequently happens t at after the other of their edges so that they bind in the frame. By use of the present hinge shouldsuch sagging or binding occur the leaves of the hinge may be shifted in order that the door may lit snugly in the frame or clear the floor or other surface when swung over the same."
In the accompanying is a side elevation of one with parts broken away and parts in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form of drawing: Figure 1 the hinge As shown in Fig. 1 the hinge comprises a leaf 1 having at its ends and at one edge knuckles 2. The other leaf 3 has at one edge and at a pointl between its ends a knuckle 4. Pins or pintles 5 are screw threaded through the knuckles 2 and are provided at their outer ends with slots 6. The inner ends of the pins 5 are reduced in diameter as at 7 as they enter the knuckle 4. Washers 8 are mounted upon the pins 5 at the outer ends of the reduced portlons 7 and are seated upon shoulders 9 formed at the inner ends of the threaded portions of the said pins 5. These washers 8 bear against the ends of the knuckle 4. When the hinge is applied to a door and in the event that the door should sag a be inserted in the slots 6 5 and the said pins may be rotated whereby they are moved longitudinally in the knuckles 2. The knuckles 2 are spaced from each other for a distance greater than thc length of the knuckle 4 and consequently form of the hinge .n
as the pins 5 are moved longitudinally as above indicated the washers 8 bearing against the ends of the knuckle 4 will cause the leaf 1 to move with relation to the leaf 3. Inasmuch as the leaf 3 is attached to the frame and the leaf 1 to the door or vice versa the door is moved with relation to-the frame and consequently the door may be positioned to fitsnugly in the frame.
In the form of hinge as shown in Fig. 2 the" same generall arrangement of the parts is .observed the exception being that the form of'hinge as shown in the said figure is of a heavier type than that shown in Fig. 1 andthe leaves 1. and 3 are provided with additional knuckles .in the intermediate members of which'is located an additional pin 10.
Having described the invention what is claimed 1s:
1s A hinge .comprising two leaves each having knuckles, the yknuckles upon one leaf being' spaced apart for a distance greater than the length of leaf, ins screw-threaded in the knuckles of the rst mentioned leaf and having diametrically reduced cylindrical end portions the knuckle of the second mentioned leaf having a longitudinal bore which extends from end to end thereof and which receives the reduced cylindrical ends of the pins.
2. A hinge comprising two leaves having knuckles, the distance between the knuckles upon one leaf being greater than the length of the knuckle upon the other leaf, pins screw threaded in the knuckles of the first mentioned leaf and having diametrically reduced cylindrical end portions and provided at the ends of said reduced portions with shoulders, washers located on the said, shoulders and bearing against the ends of the knuckle of the second mentioned leaf, the knuckle of the second mentioned leaf having a longitudinal bore which extends from end to end thereof and which receives the reduced cylindrical ends of the pins.
3. A hinge comprising two leaves each having knuckles` the distance between the knuckles upon `one leaf being greater than the length of the knuckle upon the other leaf, pins screw threaded in the knuckles of the first mentioned leaf and having diametrically reduced cylindrical end ortions, the knuckle of the second mentione leaf having the knuckle on the other a bore which receives the reduced cylindr- In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my cal ends ofthe said pins and a .third pin signature in the presence of two Witnesses. Carried in said bore and interposed between JACOBIHYYSQN MOOREk the reduced 'ends` of the rst mentioned pins and adapted to prevent the first mentioned Witnesses:
pin from binding against the 'knuckle of T. C. WIGGANS, the second mentioned leaf. A. R. HARKNEss.
