Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July r4, rem.
Application filed November 21, 1913. Serial No. 802,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY O. JOY and ARTHUR R. MONTFERRAND, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Appliances and Bath-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination washing appliance and bath seat adapted especially for use in apartments and houses having inconvenient set-tub facilities.
The object of the invention is to provide an appliance which is adapted to be sup ported upon a bath tub, comprising a frame adapted to hold a pan or tub, and a wash board hinged to said frame, the arrangement being such that the board may be swung up into position to enable clothes to be rubbed thereon, or folded down upon the frame to form a bath seat, and when not in use the device may be hung up Without occupying much space.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing the wasl -board swung up for use, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the board in position for use as a seat.
As illustrated in the drawing the device comprises a frame composed of a pair of relatively long rods 10, 11 connected by a pair of relatively short rods 12, 13. The rods 10, 11 are curved at their ends, and preferably inclosed in short pieces of rubber tubing 14L, said ends being curved to fit the roll 16 at the upper edge of a bath tub 18. The rods 10, 11, and 12, 13 are spaced apart so as to form a substantially square frame which is adapted to engage the flange 20 of a pan or tub 22. This pan may be of any convenient size and depth. We have found that a standard 15 inch pan is very satisfactory, and is one which can be readily replaced when required.
A wash-board 24: is mounted upon a board or cover 26. This cover is preferably rounded at its lower edge and provided with a air of sheet metal bands or wear-resisting plates 28, which are adapted to bear against the rods 10, 11 when said board is in the position shown in Fig. 1. The board or cover in Combination VVashing' 26 is hinged to the rod 13. As shown, a pair of plates 30 are pivotally mounted at one end on the rod 13, and at their other end they are pivotally connected to the side cleats 32 of the cover. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the lower edge of the cover 26 engages the plates 30 intermediate their ends and also engages the upper sides of the rods 10, 11, and is thus held in an inclined position so that a person standing beside the bath tub 18 can conveniently rub clothes on the wash-board 20.
When the cover 26 is folded down into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the appliance can be used as a bath seat for use in taking foot baths, and the like. When the device is not in use, the pan 22 may be removed from the frame and hung up in a convenient place, and the cover 26 may be fastened to said frame by a catch 27 if desired. The frame and cover may then be hung upon the wall, and it will be observed by reference to Fig. 3 that the appliance will project only slightly from the wall upon which it is hung, and will consequently occupy only a small space.
From the description above set forth, it will be observed that the appliance is adapted for use in small apartments and houses where set-tub arrangements are inconvenient or lacking, and when not in use can be stored in a small space.
What we claim is 1. A combination washing appliance and bath seat, comprising a frame adapted to be supported upon a bath tub, a pan supported by said frame, a cover hinged to said frame, and a wash-board on said cover.
2. A combination washing appliance and bath seat, comprising a pair of rods having their ends bent and arranged to engage the roll at the upper edge of a bath tub, a pair of short rods connecting said first-mentioned rods, a receptacle removably supported by said rods, a cover hinged to one of said short rods, and a wash board mounted on the under side of said cover.
3. A combination washing appliance and bath seat, comprising a frame having a pair of elongated members arranged to engage the upper edge of a bath tub, a pan removably supported by said frame, a cover, a pair of plates pivotally connected to said cover and to said frame and adapted to be 4. A combination ashing appliance and bath seat, comprising a frame arranged to engage the upper edge of a bath tub, a receptacle removably supported by said frame, a cover hinged to said frame,- and a Wash-board carried on'the under slde of said frame, said cover forming a seat when f0ld- I ed down on said frame but arranged to be supported in an inclined position to enable said Wash-board to be used With said receptacle.
In testimony whereof We have afiixed our 15 signatures in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
