I-IAGKSAW-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD M. FAIR- BANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hacksaw-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a hack saw frame constructed in accordance with my inven tion. Fig. 2 a side view of the slide member, detached. Fig. 3 a broken side view showing the slide moved with relation to the socket so as to release the clamping member. Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line a-Z) of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a sectional View onthe line cd of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 a plan view of the locking loop, detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in hack saw frames, and particularly to frames which are adjustable for saw blades of different lengths, the object of the invention being to provide a simple construction whereby the frame may be readily adjusted for different lengths of saw blades, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a socket member 2 which, as herein shown, is formed from a piece of metal folded to form a tubular socket which is attached to one end 3 of the saw frame to which the handle l is connected, the outer end 8 of the socket being beveled for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The other end 5 of the saw frame has a straight member which I will call a slide 6 formed in its inner edge with notches 7 spaced apart corresponding to the different lengths of saws to be used. Upon the slide 6 is a clamping loop 9 which is adapted to freely ride upon the slide and have its lower edge engaged with any one of the notches 7 so as to form an abutment for the outer end of the socket-piece 2. The ends 3 and 5 of the saw frame are provided with saw-blade holding members 10 and 11 of any approved construction one of them being adjustable so as to impose necessary strain upon the saw blades. Before the saw blade is inserted the clamping loop is moved upon the slide 6 to the required point, and then the socket member moved up against it, and owing to the inclination of the outer end of the socket-member, the clamping loop will be tilted; and as its inner end is held in one of the notches 7 it follows that a rigid stop is provided to limit the movement of the socket-member with relation to the slide, and the parts will be held in this position by the tension placed upon the saw blade.
With this construction the parts are readily adjustable as it is only necessary to move the clamping loop 9 upon the slide to fix a stop which limits the movement of the socket member upon the slide.
I claim 1. A hack saw frame comprising a socket member, a slide, and a stop-loop, the outer end of the socket member beveled and adapted when forced against the stop-loop to cause it to engage with the slide whereby it is held against further movement into the socket.
2. In a hack saw frame comprising a socket member, a slide and a clamping-loop the outer end of the socket member beveled, one edge of the slide formed with notches with which one edge of the loop may engage, Whereby a stop is formed to limit the movement of the socket onto the slide.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEONARD M. FAIRBANKS.
