Be it known that l, S'ronns M.- Bisi-tor, a citizen of the United States of america, residing at the city of`Schenectady, in the eounty of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Power-Shovels, of which 4the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to power shovels, and the object ot ,my invention is to provide a means for mounting a shovel in connecti on With a carriage adapted to ride along; a boom under the influencel oi anwengine or counterweights, il desired; together 'with such elements and combinitionsvas are here inafter more particularly set forth and claimed. l accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism, illustrated in the accon'ipanying,` drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the carriage and boom along ,the lines X-X on Fig. Fly, 3 is a section through the carriage and boom along' the lines Y-Y on Fig'. 2. Fig. l is a side elevation of a niodilied form.
Similar letters refer to throughout the several views.
A, is a suitable mast or other support, and B is a boom suitably mounted at C, the hoornV beingcapable of .a rotary 'motion around C, as a pivot under the direction of' the rope or cable, D, which passes over the sheaves, E, in the block, F, attached to the head of the mast, A, and over the sheave, g, in the block, G, attached to the head o'lithe boom, B; also secured preferably at one end to "the block, G. lt also passes over the sheave, H, near the head oi the mast, A, 'from whence the rope passes to the engine or device used .for raising the boom, not shown.
The rope or cable, J, is secured to the block, l, attached to the shovel, L, and also passes over the sheave, 7.1, in ihebloch, l,
similar parts the sheave, wi, in the block, M, attached to;
the head of the boom, l, posses o-verthe sheav'e, N, inthe boom, B, and the sheave, G, on the side ol the ninst, A., and passes to the apparatus used for operating saine, not shown.
l do not claim any invention in the man nerof connecting-up the mast, boom and sheaves so far as already referred to and l therefore have ,given but an outline riesci-in tion of the cables and their connections with the boom, mast end sheaves.

The flanges, o, and t, form supports for the rollers, l. and ons the carriage, S, and the flanges, n', and t, are engaged by the rollers, S and et, on the cairiatg#A as shown in f The carriage, Si, comprises two paellel plates, 5, 6, through which the rod, R carryingl the rollers, l, 2, and the rod, 8,carrying the rollers, 3, il, pi ss. They are held together ily suitable tie rod, 9, and plate, l0,
the tie rods beine" securedby suitable nut,
n, screwing onto the threaded end, U, of the tie'rod, Q. The plate, l0, is secured by bolts,
l1, passing through the flanges, l2, on the plate, l0, and also through the plates, 5, 6, respectively. Between the plates, 5, 6, ll place the movable plates, i3, l-l, carrying a series oli U'sshaped staples, 15,1;l'1roug`l1 which the cable, 1G, pass-es and by which it is held in position.' ',llhrough the plate, l0, l place e. series oi bolts, il', which extend trom the plate, ll, through the plate, 13, and through the plate, lei, and are held in position by means 0I" the nuts, lS. @n the bolts, 17, I place the spiral springs, if), resting one end against the plate, 13, and the other end against the plate, l0. Between the plates, 153,14, l .place the elliptical springs, 20, one spring preferably at each side olthe plates as shown in 2. To the under side ot' the plate, 13, as the plate is mounted, l place a series of concave blocks 211, adapted 'to engage the top of the cable, 1G, when held by the til-shaped staples, A
Between the pistes, 5, o, and beneath the v plate, le, mounted -on o suitable holt, 9, l

The cable, 35, connected with the pin, 32, may be attached to one arm, 36,- of the bell crank-lever, 37, secured to the clipper arm, 23, 0r to the shoe, 27, attached thereto. tached to each end thereof, at 50 and 51, the opposite ends of the cable, 44. The cable,
44, passes over the pulley, 42, on the shaft,
43, near the/ end of the boom and also over drum, 46, and sheave, 4,5, near the other end of the boom. This arrangement. permits tl'iecarriagc to move away from the mast toward the free end of the boom during To return the carriage after the shovel is dumped I attach a cable, 52, to the carriage at 53, pass the cable, 52,v over the sheaves, 45, and 54, and secure a Weight, 47, to the loose end ot the cz1ble,wvhich Weight is sutiicient to return the carriage to its operative position after the shovehhas been dumped.
I show in Fig. 4 Ia modified form of the means for moving the carriage. The cable, 44, is passed several Itimes around the drum, 46,. for the purpose of making a gri means of the cable, 75, passing over the drum, 4G, und over the drum, 76, of the hoisting engine, 77. The hoisting engine, 77, may be constructed 'in any suitable manner.
The operation of my invention is'as follows :The shovel is directed vin the usual manner with its toe pointing into the dirt.
Power is applied to the cable, J, which is transmitted through the cable, J, to the for ward part of the shovel and the shovel be- I gins to rise. lVhile the shovel isl in the ground and in the position for filling, the
end of the dipper arm, 23, is in engagement,
with the movable plate, 14, causing the cable, 16, to be gripped between 4the plates,
13 and 14, and the carriage is prevented from moving on the boom. When, however, the shovel is raised by the cable, J, the end of the dipper arm is moved so that because of the cam-shaped contour thereof the grip on the cable, 16, is released,`.permit ting the carriage to move toward the end of the boom. In order to return the carriage after it isdumped, I operate the power j 46, which by'means ofthe engine drum,- connected therewith moves' the carriage toward the mast. I may substitute for the engine the counter weight and attachmenthereinbefore described.
It is understood that the cable, 16, is
secured ateachten'd to the boom, B. V
