To all wiz am it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT MALSIN, citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Skirts, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to ladies skirts, in which the fullness or excessive width of the skirt is gathered together by means of elastic bands as described and claimed in my prior application Serial No. 624,566, filed May 2, 1911.

Owing to the gathering of the skirt or the plaits the skirt has a very clumsy appearance and it is the object of this invention to provide means whereby the plaits may be covered up without diminishing or in anywise affecting the elasticity of the skirt and without rendering the skirt cumbersome.

My invention will be fully understood by referenceto the accompanying drawing in Which Figure 1 illustrates in elevation one form of construction of my skirt; Fig. 2 a cross section thereof and Figs. 3 and 4 show in elevation two other forms of construction, similar reference characters denoting corresponding parts.

WVith reference to Figs. 1 and 2, a denotes the skirt, which by an elastic band arranged along the waist line is gathered or plaited as at a to be adjustable in width, in order to fit different waist measures, but particularly to serve as a so-called maternity skirt. These plaits render the skirt objectionable. In order to improve the appearance of the skirt, I provide an appliance, whereby the plaited part of the skirt Will becovered up, while the elasticity of the skirt Will not be affected. This appliance consists of a band of cloth I) having a-width about equal to the length of the plaits and the ends of which by elastic bands I) are'fastened to the skirt at the seams a Sewed to the skirt at their outer ends, at d, are tr: strap like pieces d of the same material as the skirt and of the same Width as the band I). These straps or flaps are adapted to extend'toward one another. The band 6 is provided near its ends with longitudinal recesses. or slits 6 through which extend the threads e fixed to the skirt, as at 6 at one end and carrying buttons or beads e at Specification of Letters Patent.

their opposite ends. These buttons or beads rest against the outer faces of the straps or flaps (Z and hold the latter flatly against the band I). The object of these straps or flaps is to cover up the elastic bands I) of the strap or band b. The inner or opposite ends of these straps will in normal condition of the skirt, that is when not expanded,be closer to one another, than when the skirt is expanded. The band Z) behind the straps will be more or less exposed according to the expansion of the skirt. In any case the band 6 will cover the plaits, while the straps will cover the elastic bands 6. During the expansion of the skirt inwidth the threads carrying the buttons or heads will be displaced along the slits in the band 6.

The modification, according to Fig. 3, presents a simplified construction accomplishing the same object. Here two straps f, f are provided, which at their outer ends are stitched to the skirt at the seams a These straps are made wide enough to cover the entire length of the plaits a and long enough to overlap one another; At their ends the same are reduced in width. One of the straps is provided on its outside with a loop f and an incision f through which the reduced portion of the opposite overlapping strap is passed behind the former. The ends of the straps carry elastic bands 9 which are secured to theskirt at the seams abehind the straps f, f. When the skirt is expanded in width the two straps will yield, sliding upon one another, without eX- posing the plaits.

In the modification, according to Fig. 4, the construction is still more simplified. Here the straps or flaps 7t, h which are adapted to cover the plaits a are unyieldingly secured to the skirt at the scams 1). In normal or unstretched condition of the skirt they are each adapted to extend about the entire width of the skirt between the twoseams b, b and to entirely overlap one another. One of the flaps or straps has a number of buttons or hooks 73 arranged longitudinally on its outer face, while the other has a number of button holes or eyelets j arranged, so that the flaps can be aflixed to one another to'always lie flatly against one another in unstretched or stretched condition of the skirt.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a skirt having an elastic plaited part Y being elastically 2. 3. In a skirt having an elastic plaited part to be adjustable in Width, a band of cloth covering the said plaited part and connected to the skirt, nonelastic straps extending toward one another and adapted to partly cover said band and means fixed to the skirt and adapted to hold connecting the said said non-elastic straps flatly against the said band. v

4. In a skirt having an elastic plaited part to be adjustable in band of cloth covering said plaited part and being elastically connected to the skirt, nonelastic straps and adapted to partly cover said band and means attached to the skirt by threads passed through the recessed portions of said band for holding the sald straps flatly y against said band.
