Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 141,
Application filed ,1 anuary 30, 1913. Serial No. 745,179.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that we, Louis FELDMANN, J r., and Tnnononn E. Cnncnmns, citizcns of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dis play-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part here of, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of our new display rack; Fig. 2 is a front elevational View, partly in section, of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view on the lines 3-3, Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a similar View on the lines 4-4, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in display racks and particularly in display rack main frames, the objects of our invention being to provide a rack especially designed and adapted for the exhibition or display upon a counter, showcase, or other supporting surface of articles of merchandise light in weight and which, in proportion to its display or carrying capacity, occupies comparatively little space; to provide a display rack main frame which is simple in construction and formed or made up of few separate parts or menibcrs and the several parts of which may be easily handled, readily and quickly assembled and operatively secured together; and equally readily and quickly knocked-down and disassembled, and compactly packed for shipment to provide in a rack of the lrind stated a main frame which is not only adapted to receive and support swingable wings 0r panels for the display of goods and articles of merchandise, but of which also, to increase or enlarge the display or carrying capacity of the completed rack, parts or members are themselves adapted and designed for the display of goods and articles of merchandise; to provide a rack of the kind stated, and particularly a display rack main frame, which is eflicient and durable and which may be cheaply and economicallymanufactured and supplied to customers and users at small cost; and to improve generally upon display racks of the kind described.
'With the above objects in view, our invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter '2-2 comprises outer and inner up be des and afterward pointed out in the clai As shown in the accompanying draw our new display rack comprises frame A and one or more Wings 01* pan Q B pivotally or swingably mounted in supported by frame A... c
lldain frau made up of or comprises upper and l parallel members 1 and l in the form crably of tubular metallic rods or ha i suitable length and diameter and side end members 2-2 in the form pref -"oiy of rectangular frames or wings on associated or connected at their in with said upper and lower members i a l and providing preferably inner anu on supporting feet for the finished. or s pleted rack. Each of end in no,
vertically-disposed preferably tubi tallic rods or bars 3-3, respec.v suitable size and diameter and upper lower horizontally-disposed or cross in hers l l, respectively, likewise prefer. tubular metallic rods or bars of cor: .sponi. ing' size and diameter ri 'idlysecured or so fixed together in any suitab erably by electric welding, ends, inner upright bar 3 longitudinally extensions 5 shown particularly in Fig, 2 .b so movably fit in and through alings in, and thereby engage i an,
cross members l--l. 'lhese extensions 55 are preferably of unequal length to suitably or properly correspond with pintle o extensions or pivot supports on wings B, hereinafter described, extension 5, however, being preferably of such length as to project, in the finished rack, through and below the plane of lower cross member 1 and I provide an, inner supporting foot for the finished rock, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 3. As shown in Fig.2, outer upright bar 3 of each of end members 2 also provided at its lower end with an extension (3 of suitable length adapted to provide an" outer supporting foot for the finished reclr. i
In operativcly assembling upper and lower cross members 11 and end-or side members 2-2, extensions 5-5 of end or side members 2--2 are inserted through the openings provided therefor in, and prcferably adjacent the ends of, cross members 11', end members or wings 22 being po sitioned outwardly preferably at an oblique angle relatively to cross members 1-1, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, so that the finished or completed rack may be self-supporting, lower extensions 5 and 6 resting upon the supporting surface. To now secure or hold end members or wings 2-2 in such angular position relatively to cross members 1-1 and at the sametime removably secure upper and lower cross-members 1-1' to and upon said extensions 55, set or binding screws 7, which are seated in cross members 11, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, are screwed into binding engagement with said extensions.
By the construction described, we provide anexceedingly simple display rack main frame which may be cheaply and economically manufactured and supplied to customers and users at small cost and one hav-' ing but few separate parts which may be either easily and quickly assembled and operatively secured together or dis-assembled and knocked-down for shipment or whenever desired. As shown in Fig. 2, lower frame cross member 1 may, if desired, be provided with intermediate supporting feet 8.
Each of said leaves B also comprises outer and inner upright or vertically-disposed "preferably tubular metallic rods or bars 99, respectively, of suitable size and diameter and upper and. lower horizontallydisposed cross members 1010, respectively, likewise preferably tubular metallic rods or bars of corresponding size and diameter rigidly secured or held together in any suitable manner, preferably by electric welding. These wings B are preferably swingably mounted in and supported by cross members 1-1 of main frame A, and to that end innor upright bar 9 of each wing B, which forms the axis of the wing, is provided at its opposite ends with pintle extensions or trunnions 1111 adapted to pivotally engage, respectively, with cross members 1-1 of main frame A. These wing pivots or trunnions 111.1 are preferably of unequal length, upper pivot or trunnion 11 being somewhat longer than lower pivot or trunnion 11, so that a wing B may be easily and readily placed into operative position in, or removed from, main frame A, lower pivot 11 being adapted to rest or seat in lower cross member 1 of frame A and upper pivot 11 being adapted to be inserted into and extend through a suitable alining opening in upper cross member 1 of frame A, as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 4. It will, of course, be understood that, while we have herein shown but two of said wings B, cross members 11 of frame A may be provided, as shown in Fig. 1, with a greater number of alining openings or recesses to provide for a greater number of wings or leaves B. It will also he understood that wings B, which we have here Shown merely as open frames, are, when supplied or furnished to customers and users, either wire and burlap filled, as shownin our application for Letters Patent for wings or leaves for display racks filed April 5, 1912, and
serially numbered 689,027, or wood and burlap filled, as shown in the application of Grecelius for Letters Patent for wings or leaves for display racks filed August 5, 1912, and serially numbered 713,291, for the car rying thereupon of the goods or articles of merchandise to be exhibited or displayed. Correspondingly, to increase or enlarge the display capacity of our new rack, end members 2-2 of frame A, which, as we have stated, are preferably in the form of wings, may be either wire and burlap filled or wood and burlap filled for the displaythereupon (5f additional goods or articles of merchanise.
It may be here stated that outer extensions or supporting feet 6 of frame A are preferably of a length relatively to inner extensions or supporting feet 5-5 as to throw upper frame cross member 1 slightly rearwardly of the vertical plane of lower frame cross member 1 and thereby facilitate the unfolding or swinging of a leaf or wing B after it has once been started, gravity automatically completing the swinging of a leaf or wing B after it has once passed a plane at right angles to the plane of frame A. Thus an operator or user, in displaying goods, is required to only swing a leaf or wing B through an are sufficient .0 bring the leaf or wing slightly past 90 degrees to the plane of. frame A, when gravity, by reason of the inclination of the axis of the wing or leaf, will automatically swing the wing or leaf to its limit.
We are aware that minor changes in the arrangement, construction, and combination of the several'parts of our new display rack may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of our invention.
Ha ving thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a knock-down display rack, the combination with upper and lower main metallic cross-bars, each of said cross-bars being transversely provided adjacent its opposite ends with through-OpeningS, the openings of said upper cross-bar alining with the openings of said lower cross bar, of end members, each of said end members comprising inner and outer upright metallic bars and metallic cross-bars rigidly fixed together, the outer upright bar of each of said members having at its lower end an integral longitudinslextension forming an outer supporting foot for the rack and the inner upright bar of each of said members being provided at its opposite ends with integral longitudinal extensions loosely and re'movably fitting in. the elining openings of said main cross bars, the lower extensions of said inner upright bars having a length to extend through and below the plane of, said lower main cross bar and forming inner supporting feet for the rack, and laterally-disposed set-screws seated in said main cross bars for bindingly engaging with said inner upright I bar extensions and thereby detachably securing said end members and main cross bars opera tively together and in relatively fixed positions, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof, We have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
