with relation to the flask; further, where- I by the pattern on the face-side of the matchplate may be molded in the drag, and the match-plate, after the drag has been turned, then partially raised, the mold provided with a suitable surfacing powder, and the match-plate then accurately returned to original position for the purpose of reprinting; and further, whereby the match-plate may be readily removed upon only partial raising of the cope, the cope belng then swung back into mating relation with the drag so that the molded portions in each will register accurately with each other.
It is a further object of my invention to so construct the hinge that the movements of the match-plate and cope will take place in such manner as to cause accurate registry of the match-plate and of the molded parts with relation to the other.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flask with a match-plate between the cope and drag, the cope being in partly raised position, this partly raised position being suflicient to permit the removal of the matchplate, the latter being shown in inclined seated position in full lines, and in dotted lines to show the clearance provided be tween the cope and drag for removal of the same upon only slight raising of the drag. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the hinge, the drag, match-plate and cope being partly broken away, the parts being shown in closed relation. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same with the cope in partly raised relation. Fig. i is a side elevation of the same, with the cope and drag in closed relation and the match-plate removed. Fig.

11 represents the cope and 12 the drag of a molders flask, between which a match plate 13 is arranged to be received. This match-plate has on its face-side 14, the face of the pattern which is to be molded. In
practice the face-side is usually molded while the drag is in inverted position,
:whereupon the drag is provided with a bottom or follow-board and the drag reversed for bringing the match-plate at the top of the drag. The cope is then placed upon the match-plate and provided with molding sand which is then suitably pressed into the cope against the back-face 1 5 of the match-plate. It is of course 0bvious that the molding in the drag and cope may take place simultaneously by pressure or otherwise, depending on the system of molding employed.
For suitably positioning the match-plate and permitting its movement with relation tothe drag and cope and for suitably positloning the cope with relation to the matchplate and drag, I provide novel hinge mechanism which I shall now describe. The pivotal sides of the drag, match-plate and cope are provided at a plurality of points, preferably near the ends of said sides, with hinges 16, 16. Each of the hinges is provided with a drag member 17 a match-plate member 18, and a cope-member 19. The drag-member is suitably secured to the drag of the flask. It is provided with a plurality of hinging points, one of which isa-pplicable to the match-plate member and the other of which is applicable to the copemember of the hinge, thes hinging points being in separated parallel vertical planes, arranged at d-iiierent distances with relation to the drag. The match-plate member is provided with spaced-apart bearing-disks 21 having a trunnion 22 therebetween pro vided intermediate of its ends with an interruption 23. The inner faces 24 of the disks are'preferably formed sloping.
I have shown the butt 25 of the matchplate member of the hinge secured to the match-plate with the upper and lower. faces of the butt coincident with the upper and lower faces of the match-plate, but the match-plate member of the hinge may if desired be made integral with the match-plate.
The drag-member is provided with spaced-apart bearing recesses 28 for the bearing-disks 21 and a channel 29 for the trunnion 22. The side walls 30 of th bearing-recesses, slope to match the sloping inner faces 24 of the bearing-disks. The
1 downwardly proj ectin drag-member comprises a rearward extension 31 in which there is a bearing-slot 32 at the sides of which there re sloping walls 33 forming clearance recesses 34 in rear of the channel and connecting with the channel by depressions 35, forming sand clearance spaces for the channel. The interruption 23 forms a clearance-space between the trunnions 22 and channel 29, and the rear edge 36 of the matclrplate member at said interruption forms a wiper for any sand which may be lodged in said channel. The drag-member is shown suitably secured to the drag, as by means of a butt 37 and a tail-piece 38.
The cope-member is provided with bearing-recesses'41 which coact with the bearing-disks 21. These bearing-recesses are spaced apart. This spaced-apart construction gives great rigidity to the individual hinges. It also comprises a rearward extension 42 having a pivot-pin 43 thereon, at the ends of which outwardly sloping lateral bearing-faces 44 are provided, there being an opening 45 in said cope-member forward of said pivot-pin through which the front upwardly extending wall 46 of the slotbearing 32 is received. The rear wall 47 of said bearing-slot is preferably higher than the front wall thereof. The copemember is provided with suitable means for securing the same to the cope, as by means of a butt 48 and a tail-piece 49,
The axis of the bearing-disks of the match-plate member is located in the plane of the lower face of the match-plate when extended, and the bearing-recesses 28 are substantially a half-circle for receiving the portions of said bearing-disks for provic ing a large bearing surface for the match-plate member when swinging the match-plate upon the drag. The form of the trunnion and the interruption therein and the sloping mating faces between the bearing-disks and bearing-recesses provide means whereby sand is cleared from the hinge.
In order to accurately locate the cope with relation to thematch-plate, the oope-mem- 7 adjacent to the match-plate,so' as to acourately position the cope with relation to the match-plate. My improved hinge also permits the match-plate to be removed upon only slight raising of the cope. Upon a slight raising of the cope, the pivotal bearing thereof is transferred from the bearing-disks 21 to the slot and pin pivot 32, 43,
and upon such transference and a slight,
further raising of the cope at an angle of approximately forty degrees, the matchplate is readily removed, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. My improved construction further permits the match-plate to be raised upon its bearing-disks for fac the accurate positioning and matching of.
the cope-portion of the mold with the dragportion thereof, by swinging the cope upon the pivot-pins 43 resting upon the bottoms of the bearing-slots 32, the axes of these pivot-pins being in the plane of the upper surface of the drag and the lower surface of the cope. The axis of the pivot-pin 43 is located in a vertical plane which is par allel to but separated from the vertical plane of the axis of the bearing-disks 21.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A flask-hinge comprising a drag-memher, a cope-member, and a match-plate memher, the said match-plate member comprising spaced-apart bearing-disks having peripheral bearing surfaces and a trunnion therebetween of substantially less diameter than said bearing-disks, said drag-member provided with spaced-apart bearing-recesses for said bearing-disks, and the said trunnion and drag-member provided with a sandclearance recess located between said bearing-disks when said hinge is assembled.
2. A fiask-hinge comprising a drag-member, a cope-member, and a match-plate memher, the said match-plate member comprising spaced-apart bearing-disks and a trunnion therebetween of substantially less diameter than said bearing-disks, the said dragmember provided with spaced-apart bear ing-recesses for said bearing-disks, an in Cope-member provided with a pivot-pin for said bearing-slot.
3. A flask-hinge comprising a drag-memher, a cope-member, and a match-plate memher, the said match-plate member comprising spaced-apart bearing-disks and a trunnion therebetween of substantially less diameters than said bearing-disks, the said drag-member provided With spaced-apart bearing-recesses for said bearing-disks and a channel between said bearing-recesses for said trunnion, said trunnion provided with an intermediate interruption forming a sand-clearance space in said channel.
