Description

w. J. HESTER.
WINDOW LIFT.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 13, 1913, 1 102 506 Patented July 7, 1914.
4 5 X F JJ THE NORRIS PETERS CD., PHOTO-LITHO WASHINGTON, D4 G.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- WILLIAM J. HES'IER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
WINDOW-LIFT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Hnsrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multno-mah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Lifts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to windows, and more particularly to a window having a window sash mounted therein, adapted to be raised slightly, so that it will clear the window sill, and then swung upon supporting hinges, at one side thereof, in the manner shown and described in United States Patent No. 1,067,427, issued under date July 15, 1913.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide in combination with such a window, a cooperating lifting device for the window sash, whereby a very slight lift is required in order to raise the window sash so that it will swing upon its hinges.
In order that others may understand my invention, I have shown one embodiment thereof in the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a fragmentary, sectional view representing a portion of a window sash and frame, and showing the hinge mounting, the upper part of the figure illustrating the application of my present invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of a lifting device embodying the invention; and Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the hinges, in the lifted and open position.
In the drawings, 1 designates a window sash, 2 a window frame, and 2 a window sill. The window sash is hinged to the window frame by means of a hinge 3, having as a part thereof an attaching plate 8*, set at an angle, as shown, and knuckles 3 adapted to be alternately positioned with corresponding knuckles 3, upon the pintle 3 the knuckles 3 upon the hinge plate 8, bein movable vertically upon the pintle 3 a c istance corresponding to the distance the window sash moves down into the window sill 2, as will be readily understood from the drawings and from the patent before referred to.
The invention proper comprises a window frame plate 4L,mo-unted in the inner face of the window frame, in vertical alinement with the edge of the window sash, said plate having a pair of projecting arms or wings,

as 5-5, extended into the window frame, with a supporting pivot pin 6 therethrough, upon which is pivotally mounted a lifting lever 7 upon the inner end of which is sus pended a balancing weight 8, within the window frame casing. Set into the edge of the. Window sash, opposite said window frame plate 4, when the window is closed, is a sash plate 10, having an opening 11 there through, at the upper edge of which, set into the edge of the window sash, is mounted upon suitable lugs 12, a lifting anti-friction roller ].3, under which bears the lifting end 7 of the lever 7. The window frame plate at has a vertical opening or slot 9 therein, which permits the end of the lever 7 to move upwardly therein in its lifting action. It will be seen that the weight 8, upon the window frame end of the lever 7, tends to lift the window sash by reason of the en gagement of the opposite end of said lever with the roller 13 carried by the window sash, and that very little lift is necessary in addition thereto to lift the window sash sufficiently to clear the window sill and permit the window to be swung upon its hinges. When the window sash is thus swtuig, it will be understood, of course, that the window sash plate 10 moves off the end 7 of the lifting lever 7.
Thus I provide a lifting device for a window sash which must be lifted slightly before it can be swung upon hinges having vertical axes, and while I have shown but one embodiment thereof, I am aware that changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the particular embodiment thereof here shown for illustrative purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a window frame and window sash of the character referred to, a lifting lever pivotally mounted in said window frame, with a weight suspended upon one end thereof and having its opposite end projected into lifting engagement with the edge of the window sash, and being detachable therefrom, whereby to permit said sash to be moved away from the lifting end of said lever, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a window frame and window sash hingedly and adjustably mounted therein, a lifting lever pivotally mounted in said Window frame and project 3. In combination, a Window frame, a
sash-hingedly and adjustably mounted in said frame, a lifting element projecting from said Window frame into lifting ena ement With saidwindow sash a Wei ht b I 3, b

v suspended from the lifting element and exerting a lift upon said sash throughsaid v liftinglelement, and a socket fixed in said sash and adapted "to be moved into and out of lifting engagement With saidzlifting element, as said Window is moved upon its substantially as described Signed at Portland, Oregon, this 6th day of Aug, 1913.
