Lamm Patent No. 110,217, nea December zo, Isvo.
IMPRQVEMENT IN WATER-FILTERS.
The Schedule rolex-nd to in the Patent and making part of the Inno.
To al! whom, it may cgncern:
Be it known. that I, JOHN W. DoUGHEnTY, of Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented a new .and-improved Water-Filter; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iu, the-art to make and use the same,
g reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to i'mprovem'ents in that class oi' water-filters which are designed for attachment to the water supply-pipes, to filter the wateras it is drawn therefrom.A
1 It consists in theimproved construction and arvrangement hereinafter described, having for its objectlnainly to provide for readily cleaning .or washing out the collections of matter separated from the water by the water flowing into it from the source, and b3' that which has passed through and is contained in the conducting-pipes above.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved filter', and
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of referenceindi'cate corresponding parts.
A is a short hollow cylinderor pipe, with screw-caps B fitting the ends snugly, to which (being preferably arranged horizontally) I attach the watersuppiy-pipe C at the top D, where an opening is iliade through' the shell into a perforated pipe E, which traverses -the cylinder and connects with a discharging-nozzle, F, ou the under side of the cylinder, having a stopcock.
G represents cylindrical fitting-cases, having perare inserted one at each end of cylinder A and extend towithin a short distance from the pipe E.
They are smaller in diameter (except at the ends;
which lit snugly) than the interior of cylinder A,
whereby spaces K are provided within the perforated sides and the interior walls of said cylinder.
From these spaces disrliargiiig-nozzles L, with cocks,
are arranged, to ict the water iow out when required. The inner' ends-oi' the cases G are covered with aunei, felt, or other subs tance, M, suitable for felting, and
' the interior spaces are to bcfiiied with powdered charcoal or other substance.
Theseeases have een trai shafts N .projecting through stutiing-boxes O in the ends, and provided with handwheeis P; or it may be cranksl or other devices for turning them, to shift the cases from time to time, tol vchange the relation of the different parts with the dischargepipes Q, to prevent the water being acted on b y part 'only ot' the contents of the eases.
The said discharge-pipes lead from the upper side 0f the cylinder to the cocklt and the conducting-pipe 'S, thelatter for conveying it to other parts of the house.
.The water entering the perforated pipe E'will pass through it, the iiltering cloths M, and the filtering substances in the cases' Gr to the spaces K, from which it will escape to the pipe Q.
The matter' accumulating in the pipe E and spaces I may bc drawn or washed ont at any time by open 'ing the cocks of discharge-nozzles F L and allowing the water to iiow directly through them under th' force due to the height of the source.
But the matter accnmnlating in the space' betw-en pipe E and the cases G, also some of tl1at\depos'ted in the cases, may be washed ontvby shutting off the water in the supply-pipe and'allowing the water in ,the pipes Q S to ilow back thronghpozzle F.
The eases G maybe" taken ont at any time, for in speetion or repairs, by removing the screw-caps B, and they may be opened for renewing the filtering material by removingthe perforated ends H andthe pieces of cloth or'felt M, which are secured to the shafts N and rings N' bythe nuts Tand forked, washers V.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to seoure by Letters Patcnt- 1. The improved water-filter, consisting ofthe hollow cylinder A, perforated pipe E, fitting-oasesG, the
su I ly and exhaust- )i e connections and the nozzles- F and L, all combined, substantially as specified. l
2. lhe cases G, and hollow cylinder A, arrangedv l for removing and specified. l
The abovespeciiieation of my invention signed by me this 30th day oi' September, 1870.
