FILTER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, 1904.
NITED STATES Patented January 3, 1905.
ATENT FFICEO FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 77 9,013, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed June 18, 1984. Serial No. 213,173.
To all 1071,0112, it may conccrm Be it known that I, CHARLES VVAHNsInDLnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, Vanderburg county, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to filters, and more particularly to that class known as pressure-filters.
The object of my invention is to provide a filter that in addition to removing from the water all foreign matter is easily cleaned and will not become clogged.
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved filter, showing sections of three of the five filtering-stones herein described; and Fig. '2 is a plan view of the cog-wheels on top of the filter, which are so arranged as to turn the filtering-stones simultaneously.
Referring more specially to the drawings, 1 represents the casing, which is divided into three compartments, 2 representing the unfiltered-water compartment, 3 representing the filtering-compartment, and 1 representing the filtered-water compartment. These compartments are all practically separated from each other by partitions 5 and 6, and the casing is provided with a suitable top 7 Journaled within the casing are a plurality of tubes 8, which are closed at both ends and are provided with apertures 9 along certain parts of their length, so as to communicate with the several different compartments. These tubes all find bearing in the partition 5 and are provided at that end with an aperture 10, which makes communication from the unfiltered-water chamber 2 to the filtering-chamber 3 possible. Surrounding these tubes 8 are filtering-stones 11, which are secured in position by clamp-nuts 12, so that the filter-tubes are practically rigid with the tubes 8.
Each one of the tubes 8 is provided with a gear 13, which meshes with the gear on the central tube. This central tube is provided with a long shank 14:, adapted to receive a hand-wheel 15, by which all of the gears are operated, so as to turn the respective filterstones. These filter-stones are all surrounded by abrasive material 16 of any suitable substance.
The operation of the device is as follows: Unfiltered water enters through the entrancepipe 17 to the unfiltered-water chamber 2 and passes through screen 18 to the apertures 10 in the tubes 8. This completely fills the filtering-chamber 3, and as the water gradually percolates through the filtering-stones it enters the apertures 9 in the tubes 8 and passes therethrough to similar apertures which coinvmunicate with the chamber 1. The water is then drawn off through the outlet-pipe for filtered water, (numbered 19.) 20 represents an outlet-pipe adapted to be used when the chamber 2 and the screen 18 are to be washed, and 21 represents an outlet-pipe to be used when the filter-stones and the abrasive material are to be washed. 22 represents the opening through which new abrasive material may be placed in the filtering-chamber, and 23 is the opening whereby this material may be removed after being used. When it is desired to clean the filtering-stones, a suitable valve in the outlet-pipe 19 is closed and a cock in the outlet-pipe 21 is opened and the water allowed to flush through the abrasive material through screen 21*. At the same time the filtering-stones are made to revolve by the operation of the handwheel 15.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a filter, the combination with a casing having a chamber for unfiltered water, achamher for filtered water and a filtering-chamber, filtering-tubes revolubly mounted within said filtering-chamber, perforated tubes centrally mounted within said filter-tubes and communicating with the chambers aforesaid, cleansing means surrounding said filter-tubes, and means for revolving said filter-tubes.
2. In a filter, the combination with a casing having an unfiltered-water chamber, a filteredwater chamber and a filtering-chamber, perforated tubes extending through said filteredwater chamber and through said filteringchamber and revolubly mounted therein, filtering-tubes rigidly secured to said perforated tubes and revoluble therewith, said perforated tubes provided with inlet and outlet ports, means for screening the Water prior to its entrance to the filtering-chamber, means for cleaning the filtering-tubes, and means for revolving said filtering-tubes.
3. Inafilter, the combination With a casing having a plurality of chambers, a screen mounted Within one of said chambers, filtering-tubes revolubly mounted in another of said chambers, perforated tubes centrally secured Within said filtering-tubes and provided With inlet and outlet ports, one of said outlet-ports being in the third chamber, abrasive material surrounding the filter-tubes in the second-mentioned chamber, and means for revolving all of said tubes simultaneously whereby the abrasive material Will clean the surface of said filter-tubes.
4. In a filter, the combination With a casing having an entrance-chamber, of a filtering chamber, filter-tubes revolubly mounted in said filtering-chamber, a filtered-Water chamber, perforated tubes connecting all of said chambers, and means for revolving the filtertubes.
5. In a filter, the combination With a casing having an entrance-chamber, of a filteringchamber separated from said entrance-chamber, filter-tubes revoluloly mounted in said liltering-chamber, a filtered Water chamber, pipes secured to said filter-tubes and communicating With all of said chambers, and means for revolving said pipes.
6. In a filter, the combination Witha casing having an entrance-chamber, of a filteringchamber separated from the entrance-chamber, a filtered\vater chamber separated from the filtering-chamber, filter -tubes revolubly mounted in saidfiltering-chamber, perforated tubes secured to and extending through said filter-tubes and communicating with all of said chambers, means for cleaning the filter-tubes,
CHARLES WAHNSIEDLER.
