To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. WAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looms, and 'particularly to filling mechanism therefor, one object of the invention being to provide a mechanism whereby the usual multiple shuttle boxes on each side of the loom may be dispensed with and replaced by a single shuttle operable to carry any desired thread through the warp, thus simplifying the filling mechanism of the loom structure to a material degree.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which will select the proper thread, attach it to the shuttle for drawing through, and attach a second thread to the same shuttle to be drawn through on the return movement of the shuttle, the use of shuttle cops being entirely dispensed with.
A still further object of the invention is to provide thread setting elements controlled by a suitable type of automatic pattern device for coaction with the shuttle, together with suitable means on the shuttle and loom frame for picking up, clamping and severing the selected threads at predetermined periods.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the filling mechanism on one side of the loom with one filling thread in position to be carried through the warp by the shuttle. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the thread setting levers. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the presser-foot for retracting the setting levers. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, showing the cam blocks and parts of the mechanism in duplicate at each side of the machine, and also showing at each side one of the thread setting levers elevated. In practice, the filling mechanism is duplicated at each side of the machine. I have, however, only deemed it necessary to show in full the filling mechanism at one side of the machine, as the operation of the filling mechanism at the opposite side will be readily understood from the subjoined description.
Referrin to the drawings, 1 designates the breasteam of the loom-frame, 2 the vibrating lay, and 3 the reed section, all of which may be of any ordinary or well known construction. 4 denotes the shuttle which is mounted to travel in the usual raceway and may be actuated by any ordinary or suitable type of operating means.
In accordance with my invention, the shuttle is provided at each end with a chamber or cavity 5 containing sets of thread severing, clamping and releasing devices, respectively arranged for operation on the reverse directions of travel of the shuttle. Each of these sets of devices comprises a stationary cutting blade 6, a coacting movable cutting blade 7, and a clamping blade or finger 8, arranged opposite the blade 6. The blade 7 is pivoted at one end, as at 9, for vertical movement, and its free end 10 is adapted to be forced down between the blade 7 and finger 8 to sever the picked-up filling thread and clamp it for travel through the warp. The said free end of the blade 7 normally projects upwardly fromthe cavity 5 and is adapted to be depressed on its cutting and clamping motion by a cam device, herein after described. whereby the filling threads are normally .maintamed at-one side of and out of the path of travel of the shuttle. The opposite ends 40 of the levers are bent upwardly at an angle, and said levers are pivotally mounted at the points of junction of their body portions andaarms 40 for independent pivotal movement in a vertical plane on a supporting rod41, the longer arms or body portions of-the levers bein ;normally de-- pressed at an angle so that t e threads normally lie, below and at one side of the plane of travel of the shuttle and also below the normal plane'.of-travel of the clamping member 30 of the pick-up device on the cam block 25. The arms 40 of the-levers are provided ''with depending pins or projections 42, which normally ride in contact with an endless pattern strip 43 movable over suitable guide pulleys 44 and" around'a pattern drum or cylinder 45., Each setting lever is nor mally balanced by a coiled spring 46 terminal-ly fastened to its arm 40 and an adjacent portionof the frame,: which spring tends to draw the pin or projection 42 down into en'- gagement with the pattern stripand cylinder, and a similar spring 47 engages the rod 41. and contact pin or projection 22 of theactuating bar 19 and serves to hold said bar normally retracted and to move it in a direction opposite to that in which it is moved. .by the backward motion of the lay 2. The -pattern* strip 43 is PI'OVldGd with vfmarginal openings 48 for engagement with teeth 49 on the pattern cylinder, whereby said strip is operated by the cylinder, and ,the strip is also provided with pattern per forations 50 adapted to register with sockets 51 in the cylinder, a row of the perforations 50 and 'coacting'set or series of sockets 51 being provided for cooperation with each setting'lever. The cylinder is also provided with ratchet teeth 52 ada ted to be engaged by the pivoted tooth 53 o a spring retractedratchet dog orpawl 54 limited in its rearward motion'by a stop pin 55, which dog is adapted to be engaged and moved forward by the pin or projection 20 to transmit motion to the cylinder and pattern strip when the bar 19 is moved forward by the lay 2 on the backward motion of the latter. When the lay 2 moves forward, its pressure on the arm 21 of the bar 19 is; released and said bar isdrawn backward by the actioir'of the mroaarm spring 47, and at the same time the dog54 is returned to normal position, its pivoted teeth 53 riding backward over the inclined faces of the ratchet teeth 52.
The perforations in the pattern sheet and cooperating sockets in the pattern cyllnder are so arranged as to effect the elevatlon of but a single thread-elevating or selecting lever at a time. For the purpose of depressing each lever after elevation and actuation of the shuttle on its thread feeding movement, a presser foot or depressing device 56 is provided. This presser foot or depress ing device is hinged at one end to the rod 41 and has a lateral arm 57 arranged to ex tend above and rest upon any of the levers, and an offset or cam ortion 58 which is adapted to be engaged by the pin 22 on the inward or forward movement of the bar or rod 19 to force said presser foot downward and consequently depress the lever 38 which has been elevated. In this forward movement of the bar 19 the pattern cylinder is fed up a distance of one tooth by the action of'the ratchet mechanism, and on the reverse or backward travel of the bar 19 the pin 22 moves out of engagement with the presser foot to release the same and the thread selectin levers to permit the next lever in the eye 0 of operation to be elevated when the coacting perforation in the pattern sheet and socket in the pattern cylinder come into operative position. At proper periods the series of thread selecting levers at one side of the machine are all depressed and maintained in depressed co-ndition while one or the other of the set of thread selecting levers at the opposite side of the machine is in action, the pattern devices at the opposite sides of the machine alternating in action to control the levers of the respective sets for the feed of filling threads from the opposite sides of the machine through the warp on each back'and forth travel of the shuttle. In order to enable this operation to be secured, it will, of course, be understood that the mechanism described is arranged in duplicate at each side of the machine and the pattern cylinder of each set of devices is provided with ratchet teeth double in number to the pattern perforations and sockets in the sheet and cylinder, so that each alternate tooth of the series will be out of register with and arranged on line between consecutive selective perfora tions and sockets. This requires each pattern cylinder to be fed up a distance of two teeth for each lever raismg operation, and between such lever raising operations the projections 42 of each set of levers ride upon the surface of the coacting pattern sheet and remain depressed, while the bar 19 is moved forward by the lay between intervals of actuation of the levers. During this interside of the machine, one of the levers atthe opposite side of the machine is projected upward to raise a thread at that side to be enganged and carried by the shuttle through the warp. The mechanism is thus ada ted to supply to the shuttle a thread of a selected character on each back and forth movement thereof, so that threads from the op posite sides of the machine will be alternately and consecutively carried throu h the warp. In order to prevent lateral p ay of each set of thread selecting levers 38, said levers are arranged to move between suitable guide members 59 carried by a bracket 60 securedto'the beam 16. The thread clamping device on each cam block is designed in practice to permit the thread when released from the shuttle to reel slightly from its spool, so as to give it a small and desirable amount of slack after it has been pulled through the warp.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that when one of the perforations in the pattern strip register with the projection 42 of one of the levers 38, said projection will pass from said perforation into the socket 51 in the cylinder registering therewith, thus elevating the free end of the lever and lifting the thread carried thereby, which extends from the cop to the selva e end of the fabric, into the path of the pic up device on the cooperating cam block, so that in the forward movement of the lay the contact 18 will engage the arm 32 and actuate the clamping member 30 to engage and sever the woven-end of the thread connected with the fabric, which drops down as a selvage end, while holding the filler end of the thread leading from the bobbin or cop clamp in elevated position, as shown in Fig. 1. The thread from the bobbin thus elevated is thereby brought across the raceway and into the path of travel of the free end 10 of the clamping member 7 between which and the clamping member 6 the thread passes on the motion of the shuttle across the loom. When said free end 10 of the member 7 comes into contact with the cam surface 26 of the adjacent cam block, said member is depressed, thereby severing the end of the thread connected with the cam 2930 and clamping the end of the thread leading from the bobbin, as shown in Figs. 14 and 15, for travel through the warp. After the thread has been drawn through the warp, the free end 14 of the acting lever 12, which has been projected by the severing and clamping operation, above described, comes into engagement with the cam surface 27 of the cam block at the opposite side of the machine and is depressed, resulting in the release of the thread, which is beaten into the fabric on the subsequent forward movement of the lay. The shuttle is now ready for backward val of rest or inaction of the levers at one travel across the machine, and in a similar manner takes up an elevated thread at'such side and carries. it through the warp back to the side of the machine first-mentioned, the surface 27 of the cam block at which side actuates the releasing lever of the set of cutting severing and clamping devices at the opposite end of the shuttle from that first named to efi'ect the release of the thread.
It should be said, that on the forward movement of the lay the contact 21 of the bar 19 is released, thereby allowing the bar to be drawn rearwardly by the spring 4:7 and the dog 54 to be freed for a feedup motion by the pin 20, while at the same time the projection 22, which normally engages the cam surface 58 of the pressure foot 56 to hold the levers 38 depressed, is moved backwardly out of engagement with said cam surface, allowing the pressure foot to'be retracted and the selected lever 38 to be raised. In this operation the arm 32 of the clamp ing member 30 also comes into engagement with the contact 18 and is closed to engage the thread in the manner before described. On its backward motion, the lay engages the contact 21 and moves the rod 19 backward against the resistance of the spring 47, thus causingvthe contact 20 to engage and move the dog Set on its feed-up motion, while the contact 22 again engages the cam surface 58 of the pressure foot 56 to force thesame down and hold the levers 38' depressed, and the arm 32 of the clamping member 30 is brought into engagement with the contact 17 to open said clamping member to free the particle of thread previously taken up and clamped thereby and to reset said clamping member for t e subsequent pick. It will accordingly be apparent that on each forward motion of the lay the portion of the elevated and selected thread extending from the woven fabric to the bobbin will be engaged and clamped by the clamping member 29-30, which will sever the fabric end of the thread from the bobbin end of the thread, on the backward movement of the lay, will carry the latter named end of the thread. across the raceway into the path of the shuttle. It will further be apparent that in the travel of the shuttle the acting clamp 6-7 thereon will engage the portion of the thread extending between the bobbin and the clamp 2930, will sever that portion of the thread held by the clamp 2930, while holding that portion of the thread leading from the bobbin and carry the latter named end of the thread across the loom, so that when such portion of the thread is beaten into the fabric, the conditions originally described will be restored ready for a repetition of the stated operation, that is a portion of the thread will ex tend from the fabric to the bobbin ready to be elevated, engaged b the clamp 29-3( and drawn into the pat of theshuttle, en-
moans gaged and severed from the particle of thread heldby the said clamp 29--30 and carried acrossthe loom, thereby fproviding for a continuous operation of the lling mechanism in a manner readily understood.
In each of its back and-forth travels, the shuttle comes in contact with the brushes carried by the cam blocks which brushes assist in maintaining the threads in-alinement and also swee the exposed portions of the shuttle free 0 all lint or severed particles of thread. The filling mechanisms at the opposite sides of the machineactuate in alternation, as described, to control the setting levers and pick-up devices of the respective sets, whereby on each back and forth travel of the shuttle a positive and reliable feeding action of the selected threads through the warp from opposite sides of the machine in alternation will be secured. It will be understood that in these operations two pattern sheets and cylinders will be employed, but thatby mounting both attern cylinders on a common transverse s aft it will only be necessary to use a single ratchet feed mechanism and single coacting actuating bar 19.
It will be obvious that my invention dispenses with the use of the ordinary multiple shuttle boxes-on opposite sides of the loom, and substitutes therefor .a single shuttle which operates to carry the threads from the opposite sides of the machine through the warp, thus dispensing with complex shuttle box mechanism and the use of a plurality of 10;} shuttles having bobbins or cops, the advantages of which will be apparent to those versed in the art. By means of my improved filling mechanism filling threads selected in accordance with any prescribed pattern will be positively engaged and carried through the warp, insuring reliability and certainty of operation at allspeeds, and dispensing with the use of devices liable to frequently get out of order or to impair m the efficiency of action of the loom.
I claim t 1. In a filling mechanismv for looms, the combination of a series of cops, a coacting series of thread guiding devices through which the threads extend between the cops and the selvage of the fabric, means for selectively adjusting said guide devices from a normally inoperative to an operative position, a lay-controlled device for picking 1% up a selected thread, drawing it across the raceway, and severing and clamping the thread at a point between the guiding devices and woven fabric, means controlled by the lay for regulating the action of said thread clamping and severing device, a shutclamp the portion of the thread connected with the cop and carry said thread through the war and fi-n-all release the same, and means or controlling said clamping and severing device on the shuttle.
2. In a filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series of cops, a series of thread guidindevices through which the threads extend from the cops to the selvage of the woven'fabric, pattern mechanism for selectively adjusting said thread guiding device from an inoperative to an operative position, mechanism for intermittently operating said pattern mechanism, a thread clamping and severing device on the lay operative on the forward motion of the lay to engage and clamp the selected thread and sever and hold the same on the backward motion of the lay to draw the clamp thread from the cop and through the guiding device across the raceway, means controlled by the lay on its backward movement to throw said severing and clamping device into action, to free the guiding device for adjustment and to actuate the pattern operating mechanism, and
operative on the forward motion of the lay to release the thread clamping and severing device, hold the guiding device inoperative and reset the pattern operating mechanism for subsequent action, a shuttle provided with a thread clamping and severin device operative to engage the thread held by the first-named clamping and severing device, to sever the thread between the same and the iding device and clamp and carry the portion of the thread connected with the cop through the warp and finall release the same, and means for control ing the said thread clamping and severing device on the shuttle.
3. In a filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series of cops, a series of thread guiding devices through which the threads pass between the cops and the woven fabric, said guiding device being pivotally mounted for vertlcal motion, a pattern mechanism for controlling said guiding devices, and intermittent feed mechanism for operating said pattern mechanism, a pressure foot for holding the guiding device from motion during periods of rest, a thread clamping and severin device on the lay operative on the forward movement of the lay to sever the thread between the fabric and selected guiding device, and clamp the portion of the thread leading from the cop and on the backward motion of the lay to draw said thread across the raceway and release the same after being taken up .by the shuttle, lay-operated means for controlling the pressure foot, pattern operating mechanism and said thread clampin and severing device, a shuttle provided with a thread clamping and severing device operated to engage the thread held by the first-named clamping and severing device to sever the thread, clamp the portion of the thread leading nally release the threa and means for contro lingl the said clamping and severing device on t e shuttle.
4. Ina filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series of thread uiding devices, pattern mechanism for in ependentiy and se ectively adjusting the same from a normally inoperative to a working position, ratchet mechanism for actuating said pattern mechanism, a reciprocating element actuated by the loom mechanism for periodically operating said ratchet mechanism, a thread clamping and severing device actuated by the lay mechanism, said device being operative to engage the thread presented by an adjusted guiding device, dispose the ,same in feeding position and release the same after a predetermined period, a shuttle provided with a thread clamping and severing device operative to engage and sever the fed-up thread from the selvage and carry the thread from the cop through the warp, and means for controlling said thread clamping and severing device on the shuttle. 5. In a filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series of thread guiding devices, loom actuated selective mechanism for independently adjusting said guiding devics from a normally inoperative to a working position, a thread clamping and severin device actuated by the lay mechanism, sai device being operative to engage the thread presented by an adjusted guiding device, dispose the same in feeding position and release the same after a predetermined period, a shuttle provided with a thread clamping and severing device operative to engage the fed up thread and sever the same from the selvage and carry the thread from the cop through the warp, and means for controlling said thread clamping and severing device on the shuttle.
6. In a filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series of thread guiding devices, loom operated mechanism for 1ndependently and selectively adjusting said devices from a normally inoperative to a working position, a thread clamping and severing device movable with the lay and operative to engage and release the thread presented by any of the adjusted guidin devices, means operative on the forwar motion of the lay to actuate said clamping and severing device to engage the thread and draw it on the reverse movement of the lay to feeding position, a shuttle operative to engage, cut and clamp the fed up thread and carry the same through the warp, and means operative on the backward motion of the lay to actuate said clamping and severin device to release the thread and set said evice for the ensuing clamping and severing at? In a filling mechanism for looms, the combination of a series ofpivotally mounted thread uiding devices, a pattern mechanism actuated by the loom mechanism for independently and selectively adjusting any of said thread guiding devices from a normally inoperative to an operative position, automatic means for retracting the respective thread uiding devices after actuation, a thread 0 amping and severing device actuated-by the lay mechanism, said device being operative to engage the thread extending between the selvage and an adjusted guiding device, disposed the same in feeding position and sever and release the thread after a redetermined period, a shuttle provided with a thread clamping and severing device operative to engage the fed-up thread and sever the same between the selvage and the aforesaid clamping and severing device and clamp and carrythe thread fromthe cop through the warp, and means for controlling said thread clamping and severing device on the shuttle.
