SIDNEY W. CO'HN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOL'S.
SMOKERS SETy Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, tiet.
Application led August 9, 1913. Serial No. 'm3,932.
Y?) all l1/mmz't may concern.'
Be it known that I, SIDNEY lV. Corin, a citizen of thc United States, and a resident ot' the city of Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Sets; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said in vention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet; of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention has general' reference to im irovements in smokers sets and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar 'combination of parts and details o' construction, as hereinafter rst-t'ully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims,
ln the sheet of drawings which serves to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a` vertical section -in line 2-2 ot' Fig. l, and, Fig. 3 is a like section in 33 oi Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end projection o'f Fig. 3, and :i modilication of the cigarette paperc'oir tainer.
Like parts are designated by corresponding symbols or characters of reference in all the figures ot' the drawing.
The object of my invent-ion is the production of asiinplc, neat, and eiiicient pocket case for the use of smokers, which .case is adapted for the retention of tobacco, cigarette paper, and a box of the typical penny safety or wind matches', and which :is sutil'- ciently compact as to be carried in the4 ownersvhip pocket. f,
Another aiin of my invention is the inclusion of means whereby all the essentials of a smoke are retained in separate receptacles, access to each of which receptacles may be accomplished by the various fingers of the hand holding thecase, so that the nger of the other hand may be employed in the process of rolling a cigarette or per smoke.
My invention is intended to be manufactured from sheet tin-nicely lacquered, and can be so cheaply produced in that forni as torender it a useful premium article. in
Fig 5 a fragmcntal section of' v closed by Y is maintained in slidable contact with initial its better grade it will be made from brass, nickel, or silver highly butled, polished and.
engraved so as to satisfy the critical pur- Chaser.
To better understand my article I new refer to the drawing in which die completed case is designated as C, lt comprises an essentially rectangular body Acomposed of front and rear sides l and 2, edge walls 3 and 4, a lower partition 5 and an open top 6, The upper edges of the side walls l and 2' are crimped inwardly slightly to form lips 7` and 8 to receive grooves 9 and 10 formed along opposite longitudinal edges of a slidin'g cover l1. The top of edge wall 3 is maintained at a height practically even, as at l2, with tliefnpper face of said cover 11, so as to form a stop therefor and to prevent the leakage of tobacco. On the other hand, the opposite" edge Wall duced in height as at i3, t0 permit the withdrawal of said cover, in which instance, however, the cover 1l has a downwardly pending lip li to avoid tobacco leakage at that point.
Near the extended edge 12 ofthe wall 3, punched through the cover il is a circular hole l5, which opening is adapted to loe an auxiliary cover i6, which cover cover ll by means of a series of prongs i7 pierced up from said cover 1l and bent over cover 16, which latter cover has a slightly raised lip 1S at its far end whereby it may be slid to and fro. Centrally and longitudinally of cover l1 is lproduced al short through slot i9, into which projects a downis sutiiciently re- Wardly pierced nose 2O 'from cover i6, thus 'f'' limiting theforwardaiid backward movev' ment thereof.
The functions of covers li and 16 may now be described as follows: W'hen it is desired to refill the case t) with tobacco, the cover 11 is almost entirely withdrawn from lips and S, when it will be found that the open top 6 will he amply large for the introduction of tobacco into `the case from the bags in which the saine is marketed. ever sufficient tobacco is wanted for cigarette and the like, cover lo is actuated to expose the opening 15, through which enough material may 'he extracted by up turning the case C,
Located about medialiy the length of eide i of the case C1 there is located a iateiaiiy slidahie tray 21",? the edges of the open top of Which iest against .the :tace of Said side l. Projecting angee 22 anti 23 are piovicied along opposite top edges of said trayj which iangee are eugage by bent prongs 24 pierce@L out from tie metal of side l, so that lateral sliding motion may he imparted to the tray 2l, the interior of which is atiapted for theu reception of a package of SLi-called cigarette paper or rice paper of propei size. To Withdraw one of these paper strips, it is simply neceseay to slide tray 2l iateially by a nger tipfflgigntii it suhcientiy overlaps edge 3 o'the'case C, Whereaftei, Toy the application of a moistened tip oi a iiggfei7 o strip ont' the cigarette paper may easily be extracted `therefrom. 7he interior thickness of the caee C is made slightly greater than the thickness of a typical box of safety matches, and at the very ioWei: end of said case, contiguous to the hottom end 6 thezoef4 of, theie is punched an chien@ hole 30 in' the edge 'Wall 3 the size of :which is siightiy gmater than `the external cross sectional dimencione of the match. cox above referred to box of matches. A similar opening 31 is punched in the edge Wali *t directly cpposite, except 'that the upper edge 32 thereof is sightly ioWei than that of opening 30. The lower surface o partition 5, here-lobe foi-e mentioned, coincides in height With the upper edge of the opening 30 so that there is produced within the iowe portion of the case C a laterally .extending ectangulai passage Way 80, for the tee reception therein of a box 40 and cover 4J. containing small safety matches now sold or given away in every tobacco Shop. The said box 40 inciudug tsembracing cover 41 is iuticciuced into the said passage way 3G- and. the piojection 32 in the opening 3l in the edge Wall f is provided as a stop to pievent the said cover passing there heyouci. When a match is Wanted a slight pressure. at the end oi the hex will force the same outwardly into the position shown in F j.,
The operation of my tobacco ceseA ie simpiicity itself, and is here hifiety described as 'foiiowsr The smoker gr'asps the case C in the right henri, pushes out the tray 2l with the bali of the thumb, extracts a strip of cig'aiette peper with the moietexied tip ci r the index finger of the iet hand, opone the cover 16 with the tip of index ihgei' of the right-hand, ovvi-turns the caso to permit the out How of tobacco through opening l5, chisce said cover, rolls the cigarette in the ueuai manner, pushes out the match-box 40, extracts a match therefrom, ami ignites the same against the roughened surface ptovidod ori the edges of the match hm; cover lil, accese to which is had thiomqhhpeniog 5f), in the bottom. (Se of the case C.
