Description

Hat-Holder.
Patented DfZO, 1870.
".PETERS, PNDTD-LITHGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D. C
tanda wie DAVID BUCHANAN, oirl PHILADELPHIA; PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,197, dated December 20, 1870.
`llinPRovizlifiEleT |N PwsHELvEs.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari:v 'of the same.
To all Iwhom it mail conce-ru Be it known that I, DAVID BUCHANAN, of Phila-A delphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Pew-Shelf; and I do hereby declare that the followng'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to the application to churchpews and other seats of public assembly-rooms of shelvesfor'holding the hats, cloaks, and other articles of the occupants; and Y It consists in the arrangement on the rear side of the front support of theseat, andunder the latter, of hinged or pivoted shelves, so constructed that they may be readily thrown down into the horizontal position and maintained there for use, and be thrown up again, and secured by a spring catch, when not wanted for use, and to facilitate sweeping and cleaning the door under them, all as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a transverse section through two seats provided with my improvement, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the shelf and the Dart of the seat to which it is attathed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding arts. f p A is a shelf, preferably made of cast metal, and may be of any suitable length. It is provided with trunnions B, onprojecting arms C at one edge, which rest in open bearings formed in brackets D, which are attached tothe rear side of the front support E of the seat F.
The arms C project beyond the trunnions suciently toengage with stops G, also attached to the Vunder it.
The open bearings are employed to admit of taking ofi" the shelves and putting them on readily.
At the present time the seats of churches and other public assembly-rooms afford no pla-ce to lay the hat, cloak, or other articles, except on the iioor, which is very objectionable; cousequentlyythese articles must be held in the hands, or, in the case of cloaks or overcoats, they may be hung on the back of the seats, if not wet, which is often the case,at which times, and always for placing the hat, the convenience of such shelves as I propose will -be manifest.
I do not' limit myself` t0 the arrangement of the hinge or pivotjoints wl1ich I have shown, but propose to make use of any that may be preferred, on whichthe shelves may be raised or lowered and held when down.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe combination of trunnioned shelfl A B, braekcts D, arms C C, and spring catch H, when arranged on the rear of a side, E, which supports the seat F, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by. me this 11th day of October, 1870.
' DAVID BUCHANAN.
