Application filed February 2G, 1912. Serial No. 680,931.1..
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the TJnited States, and resident of Charlotte, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates particularly to boxes in which sheet-material, such as photographic paper and the like, is dispensed', the object of the invention being to produce a box which may be constructed inexpensively of cardboard, or similar material, and which is normally closed securely against the admission of dust and light, but which may be conveniently opened and closed, when its contents are to be withdrawn, without separation of the elements of the box.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the box; Fig. 2 is a transverse section, on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box, showing it in open position.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention has a body of wide, shallow form comprising a top 5, sides 6, a bottom 7 and an end-piece 8, formed of thin sheet-material, such as cardboard, and permanently7 secured together, the body thus being closed except at one end. The side-members 6 of the body and the top-member 5 are shorter than the bottom-member 7, and additional thicknesses 10 of cardboard are fixed within the sidemembers G and project to the forward end of the bottom-member, thus forming lateral recesses 9 at the sides of the body. The open end of the body is provided with a cover which comprises a top-member 11, an endmember 12 and side-members 13. rlhe rear edge of the top-member 11 is hinged to the forward edge of the top-member 5 by a strip of fabric 19 pasted over the joint, so that the cover may be swung upwardly to open the body. In the normal position of the parts, however, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the top-member 11 lies in the plane of the top-member 5, while the side-members 13 fit closely against the side-members 10 and lie in the planes of the side-members 6. In the closed position of the cover, therefore, the box presents a perfectly smooth, symmetrical exterior. To maintain the cover normally in closed position an elastic band 14 is fixed at its ends to the side-members 13, and passes beneath the bottom-member 7.
lWithin the body of the box is a t-ray comprising a bottom-member 15, side-members 16 and end-members 17. This tray fits closely in the body, but is adapted to slide therein so that it may project from the open end of the body. 'Ihe sheet-material, or other contents of the box, is placed within the tray, and, when it is desired to remove any of the contents, it is necessary merely to swing the cover to the raised position shown in Fig. 3 and then slide the tray forwardly. In this position of the parts the cover is held in raised position by it-s engagement with the side-members 16 of the tray, and thus the contents may be conveniently removed sheet-by-sheet. To facilitate the removal of the contents one of the side-members 16 of the tray may be notched, as at 18. When it is desired to close the box this is done merely by pushing the tray back within the body of the box, whereupon the cover falls to closed position. Owing to the overlapping relation of the parts of the cover, the body and the tray, in the closed position of the box, the contents are securely protected against the admission of dust or light.
The box is particularly adapted for use in a photographic dark-room for the reason that it has no loose cover or other part which must be removed, and there is thus no danger of such part being displaced, so that the box may be conveniently manipulated even in complete darkness, and its proper closure is insured without careful attention on the part of the user. The box is thus particularly adapted for use with photographic material which it is essential to protect from the admission of light. The box is so inexpensive in construction, furthermore, that it may be used not only as a permanent container for material, but also as the package in which such material is sold or dispensed.
I claim 1. A box having, in combination, a body closed at the top, bottom., sides and one end, and open at the other end, a cover comprising a top-member, an end-member, and sidemembers, xed together, the cover normally closing the upper end of the body and being hinged to the top of the body at a distance from said end, an elastic band attached at its ends to the side-members of the cover and passingbeneath the body, said band tending' to swingthe @over into closed position, and a tray inolosed Within the body and adapted to slide out at the open end thereof When the cover is raised, the tray having sides With horizontal upper edges substantially at the level of the top of the box, upon which the end-member of the Cover rests when the tray is in extended position, whereby the cover is retained in raised open position.
2. A box having, in combination, a body elosed at the top, bottom, sides and one end, and open at the other end, a Cover eoinprising a top-member, an end-member, and sideineinbers, fixed together, the cover normally Closing the upper end of the body and being hinged to the top of the body at a distance from said end, and a tray inolosed Within the body and adapted to slide out at the open end thereof when the @over is raised, the tray having sides With horizontal upper edges substantially at the level of the top o' the box, upon Which the end-member of the cover rests When the tray is in extended position, whereby the cover is retained in raised open position.
