Description
dilata tat/e5 WESLEY G. WARD, O-F FAYETTE, NEW YORK;
Letters Patent No. 110,176, dated December 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-EXTRACTORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'the same.
Beit known that I, WESLEY G. WARD, of Fayette, inthe county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Implements for Extracting Nails, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying draw-y lng.
My invention relates to nail-extractors, and consists in the production of anew implernentnade for the pnrpose of drawing `nails, spikes, or similar articles, with the'aid of an ordinary claw-hammel', as hereinafter explained.
In the drawing- Fignre 1 is a side view of my new nailextractor,
hammer,kit is to be used;
rFigli-re 2 is a perspective view of the same; and
'Figure 3 is anedge view. y
The object of my invention is to provide a new, slmple, cheap, and convenient implement that may be showing how, in connection with an ordinary clawused, in connection with au ordinary cla w han1mer,.'
for extracting nails, spikes, and similar articles, the heads' of'which arel flush, or nearly so, with the wood into which they have been driven and for so extract` ing them as notto split thc wood.
To accomplish this object, I make an implement, A, of metal, and inthe form clearly shown in fig. 2, and also, in iigs. 1 and 3.
One end of this implement is made with claws, B, the ends of which taper to a point, while the opposite end is made with a head, I), and the portion intervening is curved, as shown in said iig. 2.
In applying this implement the points of the claws are held so as to straddle the head of a nail, O, and these points are then driven by an ordinary hammer, E, nnder the head of the nail, as shown in said lig. 1. The claws of the head of the `hammer E are then engaged with tle head ofthe implement, when the two, being locked, form a long leverage for starting the nail, as shownin the same figure. After the nail is thus started'the claws of the hammer can be applied to it in the ordinary way. i
The portion of my implement which bears directly upon the material, when the nail is being extracted, may be made suiciently broad to prevent its sinking into it.
This implement, it will be seen,'can be made of any size desired, but it is more especially designed to accompany an ordinary-sized hammer, and I usually make it of a size suitable for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, is-
A nail-extractor, A, consisting of a single piece of metal curved, as herein shown and described, with a claw, B, at one end for insertion under the head of a nail, and a head, I), at the other for the application WESLEY G. WARD.'
.of a hammer, asset forth.
