ALFRED WARD, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
DAUBER-SECURING DEVICE.
inermi.
Application filed ctober 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port I-Iuron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dauber- Securing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in dauber retainers, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which may easily be applied to the back of an ordinary blacking brush, thus making it readily accessible.
A secondary object is to simplify the structure of devices of this character and yet not sacrifice any advantages.
With these objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construe` tion and combination described and claimed herein and shown in the drawings wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a brush equipped with my invention, the same being shown in an open position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section with the dauber retainer in closed position; and Figs. 3 and il are vertical cross sections on lines 3 3 and 4-4 of Fig. 2, the brush not being shown in Fig. 4.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a blacking brush 1 which may be of any suitable construction, as long as there is suflicient thickness to its back to provide a suitable recess 2 therein.
Coming now to the details of the present invention, I provide a cover plate 3 for the recess 2 which may be hinged to swing over said recess in any desired manner. I provide the edges of this cover plate 3 at its hinged end, with wings or shields t and I preferably pass pivot pins 5 through these shields and into the opposite side walls of the recess 2. These wings are adapted to not only shield the bristles of the dauber 6 but to prevent the fingers from being soiled by contact with the bristles if the brush be open at its sides as illustrated. Near its outer end I provide the cover plate 3 with an inwardly extending hook-shaped keeper 7 and at its opposite end with an inwardly extending ear 8 which is slotted as at 9 for the reception of a spur l0 on the head of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, i914.
Serial No. 797,569.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
l. The combination with a dauber comprising a brush head, a handle and a spur on said head, and a retainer having a recess in one side; of a hinged cover plate for said recess, a slotted ear extending inwardly from one end of said plate and a keeper extending inwardly from the opposite end thereof, the spur on said dauber being adapted to engage the slot in said ear and the dauber handle being adapted for engagement with said keeper.
2. The combination with a dauber com* prising a brush head, a handle and a spur carried by said head, and a retainer having a recess in one side; of a hinged cover plate for said recess, shields extending inwardly from opposite sides of said plate, a slotted ear extending inwardly from one end of said plate and a keeper extending inwardly from the opposite end of said cover plate, the spur on said dauber being adapted for engagement with the slot in said ear and the handle of said dauber being adapted to engage said keeper.
3. The combination with a dauber comprising a brush head, a handle, and a spur carried by said head, and a brush having a recess in its back; of a cover plate, integral shields depending from opposite sides of said plate within said recess, pivots passing through said shields and into the side walls of said recess, a depending slotted ear integ'ral with one end of said plate, and a hookshaped keeper integral with the opposite end thereof, the spur on said dauber head being adapted to engage the slot in said ear and the handle of said dauber being adapted to engage said hook-shaped keeper.
4:. The combination with a retainer having a recess and a pivoted Cover therefor, and a dauber carried by the inner side of said cover; of spring lingers projecting outwardly from the bottom of said recess and adapted to engage the opposite sides of the handle of said dauber whereby said cover is nesses.
