FOLDING-MACHINE BLADE.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON W. BEGI-ITEL, of \Varren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Machine Blades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Heretofore in that class of folding machines wherein the paper is introduced between folding rolls by means of a reciprocating blade it has been found advantageous to equip such blades with sharp-pointed pins the ends of which project a short distance beyond the edge of the blade so as to pierce the paper before contact of the blade, and thereby prevent shifting or slipping of the stock.
The primary object of my invention is to provide means whereby the pins will be in the same plane as the edge of the blade and be supported close to such edge as against lateral displacement; and a further object is to enable such pins to be readily adjusted and firmly secured in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the blade equipped with my present improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on line 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view with parts in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a blade of the type usually employed in folding machines for introducing the stock between folding rolls, and which blade is reciprocated by any suitable means.
2 designates the pins which are carried by the blade. According to my invention the pointed ends of the pins project through and beyond the beveled edge 8 of the blade, and the latter is formed with finger openings 4 whereby the operator may readily grasp and hold each pin while being adjusted and secured in place. In the present instance I have shown the blade drilled with coincident openings at the transverse centers of the several finger openings, and I have also shown the beveled edge of the blade formed with cut-outs 5 in line with the openings for the pins so as to afford a clearance for the pointed ends thereof.

Any suitable means may be employed for locking the pins, and in the present instance I have shown such means as consisting of screws 6 passed transversely through the base or thickened portion of the blade, the enlarged head of each screw being designed to engage the base or widened portion 7 of the pin, the opening for the latter intersecting the counter-bored recess for the head of the screw.
By means of the finger openings the oporator is enabled to grasp each pin between the thumb and forefinger while the retaining screw is loosened and a pin adjusted inwardly or outwardly and the screw retightened. A resultant advantage is that in cutting away the metal from the blade to form the finger openings, the distance to be drilled to accommodate the pointed pin is very short, and hence it is practical to form such openings for the pin with a small drill. This would not be possible if it were necessary to drill through solid metal the entire depth of the blade. Furthermore each pin is supported at or in close proximity to the edge of the blade, and hence displacement by lateral deflection is impossible. It will be noted that each pin is firmly supported by the blade, on opposite sides of the finger openings.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folding blade for paper folding machines having a series of transverse bores in the plane of the edge of the blade, said edge having cut outs into which said bores open, and paper-engaging pins fitted in said bores and projecting through said cut outs beyond the edge of the blade.
2. A folding blade for paper folding machines having a series of transverse bores in the plane of the edge of the blade, and paper-engaging pins fitted in and project ing through said bores, the body of the blade at or in proximity to said edge holding said pins as against deflection in any direction.
3. A folding blade for paper folding machines having finger-openings therein, and a series of transverse bores in the plane of the edge of the blade intersecting said finger-openings, paper-engaging pins extending through said bores and finger-openings and projecting beyond the edge of the blade, and adjustable means for binding said pins.
