asaesi.
To all whom i may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jeerson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting, Scoring, and Creasing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for scoring, ruling or cutting paper, such as cardboard, and the like, especially in making boxes or receptacles.
It has for its object to carry out the saidl ends in an economical, effective and expeditious manner.
fith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out inthe appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment Vof my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of one of the cutters or creasers, Fig. 2a is a detached perspective View of a straight cutter and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detached perspective views of like devices of vari-ed outline.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a cylinder, 1', which is adapted to be suitably supported in position and given rotation for carrying out the purpose of the invention. Said cylinder is equipped with a curved or circumferential knife or creaser, 2, any number of which may be employed thereon for effecting the desired scoring or cutting of a blank, for instance, for making a paper box or like receptacle. These knives are formed with longitudinal base securing flanges making them T-shaped in cross section, through the bases of which are inserted suitable fastenings as bolts, screws, clamps, keys, or the like, for securing said cutters or creasers in proper position upon said cylinder. In lieu of this form of knife or creaser, said cylinder may be equipped with knives or creasers of the outlines shown in any of the other figures, as when it may be desired to form a lock or Specication of Letters Patent.

incision at the corners of paper boxes for effecting the interlocking of the parts thus treated. The knives or creasers of the outlines referred to in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 may be designated as 3, 4 and 5, respectively, and may be formed in any known way, as by bending, casting or routing the same into the required outlines, as will be readily understood. I may also employ in lieu of the cutters or creasers of the aforesaid outline, cutters or creasers of straight outline, 2a, which in practice are arranged upon the cylinder, l, parallel to each other in the direction of the axis of said cylinder, and at suitable intervals apart. Importance is attached in carrying out this invention to applying the knives to a cylindrical surface in lieu of a plain or fiat surface, as heretofore practiced, as I have found in practice the operation of forming paper boxes can be more economically and expeditiously performed by imparting a rotating action to the cutters, and the arrangement of the knives in cylindrical outline, than by the latter way of applying the knives to the article to be operated upon. It will, therefore, be understood that I make no claim to the simple outline of the knives, but in the use of the same, as stated, in connection with a rotating cylinder in effecting the purpose set forth. All of said knives, creasers or outliners may be made to interlock one with another and are to be made interchangeable, for the purpose of forming any size, design or pattern desired.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
The combination with a cylindrical body mounted for rotation, of a scoring knife T- shaped in cross section and having longitudinally spaced apertures in the {ianges my hand in presence of two subscribing thereokf for the plssagelof screvsbto connect Witnesses. said nife to t e cy indrica ody, said 4 flanges extending throughout the length of JOSEPH V REED 5 the knife and serving to brace the blade against lateral strains in opposite directions. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set Witnesses:
J. K. MANN, THos. B. BOHON.
