APPLIANCE FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH SAUCEPANS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES ROBERT TRIN- nnn, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and resident of 67 Garden road, Fendalton, Christchurch, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Use in Connection with Saucepans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to saucepans and provides an appliance for so holding the lid of a saucepan that vapor condensed on the lid drips into the saucepans; straining is effected without the use of a colander, and without holding the lid by hand; the cook ing of the contents of the saucepan is readily regulated, and the liability of water boiling over minimized.

I attain the above objects by means of a band embracing the saucepan and having a plate or bracket provided with a hinged arm, or the plate may be permanently fixed to or integral with the saucepan. The outer end of the hinged arm fits the handle of the saucepan lid, and the other end has a slotted pawl plate which engages a lug formed on the saucepan, or on the said plate.

Modifications of the fastenings are described in the specification.

The drawings herewith illustrate the inventio-n.

Figure 1, is a perspective View of a saucepan embodying the invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation, Fig. 3, is a plan, and Fig. 4, an end view of the appliance, Fig. 5, is a sectional elevation of a modified form of the appliance. Fig. 6, a plan, and Fig. 7, an end elevation of a modified form of appliance, Fig. 8, is a plan, and Fig. 9, an elevation showing a fastening for the band, Fig. 10, is a perspective view of a saucepan showing a further modification. Fig. 11, is a perspective view of a drip plate applied to the appliance, and Fig. 12, a perspective view of the drip plate upon the hinged arm.

Referring to the drawings :The saucepan 1 is surrounded by the band 2 which is secured by means of a clip 8, or other suitable fastening. The said clip 3 has a rectangular member 3 pivoted by a pin 3 to the band 2. A hook 3 extending from the member 3 has a beveled edge 3 adapted to engage a pin 8", the said edge 3 being slightly eccentric to the pin 3", so that when Specification of Letters Patent.

the clip is turned by means of its member 3 to engage the pin 8 the band 2 is drawn tightly around the saucepan. A plate or bracket 4 secured to the band 2 fits against the side of the saucepan, and extends upwardly so that its top is higher than or level with the rim of the saucepan. An arm 5 is hinged at 5 to the plate 4, and has a long end 5 which is doubled upon itself and fits into the lid 6 of the saucepan. A slotted pawl plate hinged at 7 to a rearward extension 5 of the arm 5 has slots 8 adapted to engage a lug 9 projecting from the plate 4. When pouring out the contents of the saucepan, or when it is desired to keep the lid in a raised position, the said lid is raised as desired, and the slotted pawl plate 7 is made to engage the lug 9.

Referring to the modifications shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, a spring 10 is used in place of the pawl plate 7 and is provided with bosses or projections 11 which are adapted to engage the end 5 of the arm 5 and hold it by friction. Instead of employing the clip 3, the band may be secured around the saucepan by means of a bolt 15, and a wing nut 15 the said bolt passing through brackets 13 and 13 upon the ends of the band. The band 2 may be made to fit saucepans of varying sizes by making the bracket 13 adjustable and by making the plate 4 adjustable in height upon the said band.

In Fig. 10 the plate or bracket 4 is shown fixed to the saucepan by rivets or otherwise and the arm 5 comprises a plate secured to the lid. The slotted pawl plate 7 is hinged to a rearward extension 5 of the arm, and is adapted to engage the lug 9 by means of its slot 8.

Figs. 11 and 12 show a drip plate 18 fixed to the arm 5 and channel shape or approximately channel shape, the horizontal part 19 passing below the lid 20 which is made without the usual rim. The said drip plate catches moisture which would otherwise drop on to the range when the lid 20 is raised. The contents of the saucepan are strained without the use of a colander or the necessity of holding the lid, by merely tilting the saucepan and allowing the weight of the contents to fall against the lid which is thereby slightly opened and allows the liquid to be drained away without danger of losing the solid contents.

What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. The combination with a saucepan having a lid and lid handle, of a band retained upon the saucepan, a bracket extending upward from the band, an arm hinged to the bracket, and having its end passing into the lid handle, and means for retaining the said arm in any desired position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a saucepan having a lid and lid handle, of a band adapted to be secured upon the saucepan, a clip pivoted upon one end of the band and having a hook shaped member adapted to engage a pin projecting from the other end of the band, a bracket extending upward from the and, an arm hinged to the bracket and having its end passing into the lid handle, and means for retaining the said arm in any de sired position, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a saucepan having a lid and lid handle, of a band retained upon the saucepan, a bracket extending upward from the band, an arm hinged to the plate, and having its end passing into the lid handle, a rearward extension upon the said arm, a pawl plate having a series of slots, attached to the said rearward extension and a lug adapted to enter the slots and hold the arm in any desired position, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a saucepan having a lid and lid handle, of a band secured upon the saucepan, a bracket extending upwardly from the band, an arm hinged to the bracket and having its end inserted in the a handle of the lid, and means carried by said arm for securing it in position.

5. The combination with a saucepan having a lid, of a plate secured to the saucepan, an arm hinged to the plate and fixed to the lid, a rearward extension to the said arm, a pawl plate having a series of slots and pivoted to the said extension and a lug adapted to engage the slots as set forth.

6. The combination with a saucepan having a rimless lid and handle therefor, of a band retained upon the saucepan, a bracket extending upward from the band, an arm hinged to the bracket, and having its end passing into the lid handle, a drip plate upon the said arm, and means for retaining the. said arm in any desired position, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination with a saucepan having a lid of a band adapted to be secured thereto a bracket extending upwardly from said band, an arm pivotally secured to said bracket and adapted to engage the lid of said saucepan and means for retaining said arm in any desired position.
