When, therefore, the two halves of the box are assembled, the joint will not be perfectly tight. 'In order to remedy this evil these edges of the boxes are bent inwardly according to the present invention, before the boxes are ejected from the box making machine, so that when the elasticity of the pasteboard makes them recede, they will go back only so far that they form a straight line. The present invention is exemplified in an embodiment in a box making machine of the kind disclosed in the United States Letters Patent No. 1,016,269.

As described in the United States specification 1,0l6,269 the box contained'in the matrix 39 and wrapped in the strip of paper is displaced to the side by the operation of the slide 29 to which the matrix 1s fitted, by means of lever 36, which is rocked by the cam disk 37 As there described, the folders 80 and 31 are moved by meansof the stops 72 and 7 3 after each other in front of the edges of the box, so that the projecting parts of the wrapping strip are folded over inward. When the slide 29 with the matrix 39 has reached its terminal position, the folders have receded again outward. At this position the matrix 39 is situated in front of the plunger 75 which is then pushed into the box in known manner by means of the cam disk 77 and thereby folds over in- 1 ward the projecting parts of the wrapping JAGENBERG,

This slide carries iat its front end a plate 41 which canenter through an opening 42 in the'guide of slide 29 behind the matrix in its terminal posi- --t-ion- The slide 38 is coupledv to the bell crank" 43 pivotedt'o the bodyofthe machine,- the other arm of which is coupled to a rod 44 by means of pin 49, to the free end of which rod is hinged a fork 45 by means of .a pin 46, which engages around shaft 36: The fork carries a roller 47 which bears against a cam disk 48 on shaft 36. By the rotation of the shaft 36 the plate 41 is then moved forward and back.
VVhen'the plunger has "been pushed into the box toward'its end the plate 41 settles againstthe'outside of the bottom of the box J so that the latter is seized between the plunger 75 and the-plate'41. The plunger 75 then recedes and at the same time and at the same rate the plate 41 advances so that the box held between them is pushed out of the matrix. Whenthe' box has emergedby about one half from the matrix the plunger 75 and the plate 41 come'to astandstill and hold the box in this position.
To the slide 29 is fittedarail 50. This rail passes through an eye 51 in the arm 52 carrying the one folder 31 and is displaceably held. to the slide 29 by means of the plate 53. In the rail 50 is provided a slot 54 in which a pin 55 on the one folder arm 30" rotatably fitted, which rides in a groove in the'cam disk 60. The cam disk is fitted on the shaft 61 also carrying the cam. disk 77, so that by its rotation also the lever 56 is oscillated.
W'hen now the box has been .ejected. by
'one half from the matrix, the lever 56 moves toward the rod 50 so that the latter is advanced. A shoulder 62 on the latter then bears against the arm 52. In consequence thereof the folder arms .31 are moved by this shoulder and the folder arms'30 by the pin 55 toward inside so that they bear against the side walls ofthe box. The fold-' ers 30 and 31 on the folder arms 30 and 31" 1 m f I v I respectively are curved on their operative edge. The sides of the box are thereby-bent inward as shown in Fig. ei. Then the lever 56 recedes and the folders are again swung outward by the springs 30 and 31". The sides of the box will then, in consequence of the elasticity of the paste-board yield partly again, but only so far that their edges form a straight line. Now the plunger 7 5 recedes alone. Then the plate 41 advances and completely ejects the box from the matrix, so that it falls into the inclined chute 63 and slides down the same into a collecting box.

A box making machine comprising a I slide, adapted to assume two consecutive positions, a wrapped box blank holding matrix carried thereby, a plurality of arms having folders, and displaceable along with the slide, means for turning said arms inwardly at the first slide position, a plunger for partly ejecting the box blank from the matrix, during the second slide position, and additional means for turning said arms inwardly during said second slide position.
