METALLIC RAIL-TIE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ZEPHIRIN BoURDEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Rail- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail ties and resides in the provision of a rail tie which will effectually prevent creeping and spreading of the rails often resultant in wrecks and consequent loss of life.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device such as above described which employs novel means for clamping the rails to the tie in a reliable and eflicient manner so that the jar or shock given the rails incident to the passing of trains will not in any way derange the rails.
A still further object is to provide a device such as described which is constructed entirely of metal and therefore the life of the device is materially increased and more rigidity provided.
A still further object is to provide a device such as described which when mounted transversely of the road bed is held against accidental derangement and which is constructed so as to afford expeditious drainage of rain water whereby rusting of the parts is eliminated.
An object of equal importance is to provide a device of the mentioned character which is constructed of few parts, simple as to the arrangement thereof, reliable and efficient in its operation and cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the followin specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.

Referring particularly to the drawings by reference numerals 1 designates as an entirety the metallic tie of my improved con struction that is formed of any suitable metal desired. A pair of upstanding flanges 2 and 3 is formed integral with each terminal of the tie at the longitudinal edges there of in spaced relation to each other. These flanges 2 and 3 taper toward their upper terminals which are flattened as at 4 and disposed in superposed horizontal alinement to the tie. The outer tapered edges of each of the flanges 2 and 3 are extended upwardly beyond the flattened upper terminal of the flanges 4t and are each recessed to form a hook shaped rail clamping memher 5 that is adapted for engagement with the base 6 of the rail 7 upon one side thereof. Bearing plates 8 which are substantially rectangular in plan are formed integral with each of the flanges 2 and 3 and disposed so that their upper faces are flush with the flattened upper terminals 4 of each of the flanges and in transverse relation thereto. The upper faces of these bearing plates 8 are adapted to have the rail bases 6 of the rails 7 disposed in bearing engagement therewith. A block 9 adapted to receive rail clamping hooks 10 is formed integral with the bearing plate 8 and disposed in spaced relation to the flanges 2 and 3 and adjacent face of the tie. This block 9 is approXimately triangular in cross section and is provided with a diagonally extending opening 11 in which is mounted the shank portion 12 of the hook members 10. The outer extremity of each of the hook members is screw threaded so as to receive a nut 13 that is turned upon the screw threaded portion and serves to hold the hook member 10 in adjusted clamping position. The hook portion of each of the hook members 10 is disposed in opposed relation to the clamping member 5 and adapted to engage the rail bases 6 at a point between the members 5. It will thus be seen that the hook members 10 are detachably mounted within the blocks 9 and that the assembling of the device is readily had.
As a means for draining the tie, the terminals thereof are inclined outwardly and downwardly as at 1 1 and the inclined portions extend for a distance equivalent to the length of the flanges 2 and 3. As the blocks 9 are disposed in spaced relation to the upper face of the tie the drainage of the tie is insured as the water will readily flow down the inclined portions thereof.
A longitudinal anchoring rib 15 is formed integral with the tie at the under side thereof centrally of the sides of the tie and terminates in spaced relation to the ends thereof. This anchoring rib 15 is adapted to be embedded within the road bed and serves to hold the tie firmly against lateral movement relative to the road bed. The tie 1 is rendered more rigid by the arrangement of the longitudinal rib 15.
Referring particularly to Figs. 5 and 6 wherein there has been illustrated a slightly modified form of my invention the construction of the tie is quite similar to that of my preferred form and consists ofthe flanges l7 and 18 which are similar to the flanges 2 and 3 of the preferred form but are not provided with the rail clamping members 5 of the preferred form.
The flanges 17 and 18 are provided with the bearing block 19 similar to the bearing block 8 in the preferred form. The lower terminal of this bearing block 19 is reduced and forms a diagonally extending projection 20 which is disposed in spaced relation to the flanges and upper face of the tie after the same manner as is the block 9 carried by the plate 8 of the preferred form. A pair of crossed, spaced and inclined openings 21 and 22 respectively is formed in the portion 20 and is adapted to receive rail clamping hooks 23 and 2s that are similar in construction to the members 10 of the preferred form. These members 23 and 24 are disposed in diametrically opposed relation and are adapted to engage the rail bases 6 of the rails 7. Nuts 25 are turned upon the screw threaded terminals 26 of held in position upon the tie by means of the clamping members 23 and 21 which are removable to facilitate the placing of the rail.
In reduction to practice, 1 have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacriicing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.

In a device of the character described the combination with a metallic rail tie of a pair of upstanding longitudinal flanges tapered toward the upper terminals and carried at each terminal of said tie, a hearing plate formed integral with the flanges and disposed flush with the upper terminals thereof, rail base clamping members formed integral with the flanges and rail clamping means detachably mounted within said bearing plate, said last named rail clamping means comprising a pair of hooks arranged upon opposite sides of the bearing plate and between the integral clamping members.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a metallic rail tie of a pair of upstanding longitudinal. flanges formed integral with each terminal of said tie and disposed in opposed relation to each other, said flanges tapering toward their upper terminals, a bearing plate formed integral with the flanges and disposed flush with the upper terminals thereof, a downwardly extending block formed integral with said bearing plate and disposed in spaced relation to said bearings and the tie, adjustable rail base clamping hooks mounted within said block, and disposed upon opposite sides of the bearing plate between the flanges, rail clamping members formed integral with the flanges and means for securing said hooks in clamped position.

In a device of the character described the combination with a metallic rail tie of a longitudinal anchoring rib formed integral with the tie and extending downwardly therefrom, said tie being inclined adjacent each terminal to provide for drainage, upstanding spaced flanges carried adjacent each terminal of the tie, and tapering toward their upper end, a bearing plate formed integral with the flanges and disposed flush with the upper surfaces thereof and rail clamping means carried by said bearing plate comprising hooks arranged on opposite sides of the bearing plate and having a shank portion inserted angularly through the plate and projecting beyond the per surfaces thereof and means for clamp? side faces thereof and means for securing ing said rail in engagement with the bearing the hooks in clamping position. plate.
