Description

G. M. BAKER.
RAIL FASTENER.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
GEORGE M; BAKER, OI BATH, NEW YORK.
nammsrnnnn.
Specification of Letters Ifatent.
Application filed my 19,1918. Serial No. 245,701.
To all whom it may concern citizen of the United States, residing at Bath, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad rail fasteners, and has particular reference to anut lock.
An object of the invention is to provide a nut lock which is so constructed and mounted that the same will be caused to engage both the railway tie and the base flange of a rail in such manner that the rail will be effectively secured in position upon the tie.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving *a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway tie, partly in' section, showing a rail secured in position thereon by means of the improved nut lock.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section through the nut lock, and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View thereof.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying-drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates arailway tie which may be made of any suitable material and which is provided in the top thereof with a railreceiving recess 6 on each side of which the top of the tie is provided with the enlargements 7. A rail 8. of ordinary construct-ion is adapted to have its base flange 9 disposed in the recess 6 with the longitudinal edges of the flange in engagement with the vertical walls of the recess, which walls are formed 1 by the enlargements 7 Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
countersunk in the bottom of the tie, and
their upper threaded ends 12 projecting through and above the enlargements 7.
A nut lock 13 is associated with each bolt 10, and is provided centrally thereof with a screw threaded opening 14:, engageable with the threads of the upper end of said bolt, and the upper portion of the nut is formed with the hexagonal surface 15 adapted to be engaged by a wrench to secure the nut in position. The lower portion 16 of each nut is preferably of circular formation, and the bottom surface thereof is provided with a plurality of radially extending ratchet teeth 17, projecting from the central opening 14 Y to the periphery of the lower or base portion of the nut.
In practice, the bolts 10 are so arranged in the tie with respect to the base flange 9 of the rail that when the nuts 13 are threaded upon the upper ends 12 of the bolts, said nuts will be caused to engage both the upper surface of the enlargement 7 and the upper surfaces of the base flange 9, and bite thereinto in such manner as to securely anchor the nuts and maintain the rail 8 in proper position upon the tie.
flVhat is claimed is I The combination of a railway tie having I spaced enlargements upon the upper surface and lock nuts mounted upon said bolts and having ratchet teeth upon their under surfaces adapted to engage the upper surfaces of said enlargement .and said base flange, whereby to secure the rail in position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEORGE M. BAKER.
