MATCH-SAFE.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS L. lVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at (:rreensburg, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide, in a match safe, novel means for actuating a carrier, and to provide novel means for striking the match and for dis posing the match in a convenient posit-ion to be grasped.
A further object of the provide novel means for actuating the match-holder.
A further object of the improve generally, devices of the type to which the present invention appertains.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood mounting and that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention there is provided a base 1 having a recess 2 in its upper face, the recess 2 being adapted to receive the lower end of a receptacle 3, provided with a lateral extension 4 having a top 5. The side walls of the receptacle proper 3 are provided with laterally outstanding flanges 5 adapted to engage the hook-shaped beads 7 formed at the lower edges of the diverging walls 8 of a closure 9 provided with a slot 10 at its apex, across which slot 10' extends a resilient loop-shaped stop 11 terminally secured to the walls 8 of the closure 9 below the slot 10. Located within the receptacle 3 and secured to the side walls thereof is a .hopper 12, provided in its lower extremity Specification of Letters Patent.

with parallel walls 14, terminating in feet 15 which are secured to the base 1.
Mounted to slide between the walls 14 is a carrier 16, the vertical movement of the carrier 16 being directed by means of a pin 17 which, being terminally secured to the walls 14 of the hopper, is received within a slot 18 formed in the walls of the carrier. The carrier 16 is a double-walled structure, and held between its walls, at the upper end of the carrier is a match-support 19. The carrier 16 is formed at its lower end with an extension 20 which is prolonged into the extension 4 of the receptacle 3. To the extension 20 is secured an upright tube 22, adapted to slide vertically in the top 5 of the extension 4. Located within the tube 22 ally, within the extension 4 of the receptacle 3.
As hereinbefore stated, the carrier 16 is a double-walled structure, and located between its constituent walls is a 1T1EttCl1-l10lCleI, denoted generally by the numeral 25, the holder 25 being equipped at its upper end with a finger 26, overhanging the matchsupport 19. Intermediate its ends, the match-holder 25 is equipped with a laterally projecting head 27, registering slidably between the walls of the carrier 16, and constituting a means for directing the tilting movement of the match-holder 25, the lower end of the matcl1holder 25 being pivotally supported upon a pin 28 extended through the side walls of the carrier 16.
A spring plate 29 is provided, one end of which is secured to a pin 30, located in the extension 20 of the carrier 16, the spring plate 29 being located between the walls of the carrier. The free end of the spring plate 29 bears against the end 31 of the match-holder 25, in approximate vertical alinement with the pin 28.
Located within the receptacle 3 and abutting against one end wall 32 of the receptacle 3 is an attrition element 33, the striking surface of which is denoted by the numeral 34. The striking surface 34 is disposed adjacent the upper end of the recep- 'tacle 3, and in close proximity to the matchsupport 19 which constitutes a part of the carrier 16. The attrition element 33 is curved slightly, adjacent the striking surface 34, as indicated at 35.
In practical operation, the closure 9 is slid to one side, so as to open the receptacle 3, the interengaging elements 5 and 7 permitting a lateral sliding movement of the closure 9. The matches are placed within the receptacle 3 and are supported by the hopper 12. If the tube 22 be thrust downwardly, the spring 23 will be put under tension, and, at the same time, the match-carrier 16 will be lowered, so that the matchsupport 19 enters among the matches which are supported in the hopper 12. A match is thus selected from the hopper 12, and when the tubular member 22 is released, the spring 23 will elevate the tubular member 22 and elevate also the carrier 16, the support 19 carrying the match upwardly until the match is engaged by the stop 11. It is to be noted that the spring 29 is curved intermediate its ends and when the carrier 16 V is depressed in the manner hereinbefore set forth, the curved portion of the spring 29 will strike against the base 1, straightening the spring, and shifting the point of engagement between the spring 29 and the end face 31 of the holder 25 to the right of the pin 28 thus tilting the match-holder 25 upon its pivotal mounting 28 so that the finger 26 may engage with one end of the match. The match will thus be held in place during the upward movement of the carrier 16. When the carrier 16 moves upwardly, the head of the match will come into contact with the striking surface 34 of the attrition member 33, igniting the match. The match will be held at a slight inclination, as shown in Fig. 2, the end of the match being engaged by the finger 26 and the intermediate portion of the match being engaged by the stop 11. The match, when positioned as shown in Fig. 2, may readily be plucked off the match-support 19, and be withdrawn from its engagement with the stop 11 and with the finger 26 of the match-holder 25 which moves with the carrier 16.
When the selected match lies upon the support 19 and is engaged at one end by the finger 26 at the upper end of the holder 25, the other, sulfur-bearing end of the match is dragging against the striking surface 341 of the attrition element 33, as the carrier 16 moves upwardly. Ultimately, however, the sulfur-bearing end of the match will move out of engagement with the striking surface 34., The tendency of the spring plate 29, when the carrier 16 is elevated, is
to swing the finger 26 to the right, and downwardly, reference being had to Fig. 2. The left hand end of the match support 19, will, therefore, act as a fulcrum for the match, and the sulfur-bearing end of the match will be elevated, upward movement of the sulfur-bearing end of the match being limited by the stop 11.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a base; a receptacle carried thereby; a carrier mounted to move in the receptacle and including a match-support; a match-holder fulcrumed in the carrier and having a finger extended over the support; and a. spring connected to the carrier and engaging the holder to maintain the finger above the support, the spring having a bowed portion engageable by the base when the carrier is depressed, to withdraw the finger from the support and to permit the support to select a match from the receptacle; and an attrition element carried by the receptacle and engageable by the match during the movement of the carrier.

I11 a device of the class described, a base; a receptacle carried thereby; a carrier mounted to move in the receptacle and including a match support; a match holder 'fulcrumed in the carrier and overhanging one end of the support; an attrition element carried by the receptacle and engageable by the match during the movement of the carrier; and holder actuating means, said means being engageable by the base when the carrier is depressed, to withdraw the holder from the support and to permit the support to select a match from the receptacle.
3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle including a hopper; a closure for the receptacle, provided with an opening; a carrier mounted to slide in the hopper and including a match support adapted to select a match from the hopper, the carrier constituting means for advancing a match through the opening; a stop extended across the opening and adapted to engage the match when the carrier is elevated; a matchholder movably mounted upon the carrier and adapted to hold the match upon the carrier during the elevation of the carrier; an attrition element adapted to engage the match while the match is being moved toward the stop by the carrier; and spring means for actuating the holder to cause the holder to tilt the match across one end of the support and effect a raising of the striking end of the match after the same is free from the attrition element.

In a device of the class described, a base; a, receptacle carried thereby; a carrier mounted to move in the receptacle and including a match support; a. match holder movable in the carrier and overhanging one end of the support; an attrition element carried by the receptacle and engageable by the match during the movement of the carricr; and means for retracting the holder from overhanging relation with respect to the support, When the carrier moves downwardly, thereby to permit the support to select a match from the receptacle.

In a device of the class described, a receptacle including a hopper; a closure for the receptacle, and provided With an opening; a carrier mounted to slide in th h per and including a match support adapted to select a match from the hopper, the carrier constituting means for advancing the match through the opening; a match holder movably mounted upon the carrier and adapted to hold the match upon the carrier during the elevation of the carrier; an attrition element adapted to engage the match While the match is being moved by the carrier; and spring means for actuating the holder to cause the holder to tilt the match across one end of the support and effect a raising of the striking end of the match after the same is free from the attrition element.

In a device of the class described, a receptacle including a hopper; a closure for the receptacle and provided with an open ing; a carrier mounted to slide in the hop per and including a match support adapted to select a match from the hopper, the carrier constituting means for advancing a match through the opening; a match holder movab-ly mounted upon the carrier and overhanging the match support; and means for actuating the holder to cause the holder to tilt the match across one end of the support and effect a raising of one end of the match.
