UNION GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Application filed March 17, 1913. Serial No. 754,860.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .IAuEs A. MAGPHER- sox, J12, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at' Kansas City, in the county of- Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in h the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in union garments of the type comprising shirt and drawer portions. I
Union garments as commonly made, have a surplusage of goods in the seat which bunches between the legs of the wearer and produces discomfort. The openings of the garment are liable to gape, which will also cause discomfort and the adjustments for opening and closing the seat opening are made at the back of the garment, where the fastenings cannot be seen and are hard to find.
One object of my invention is to provide a garment of this character in which all the adjustments may be made at the front and in an extremely easy manner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a garment in which the seat and crotch can be readily drawn up by the wearer so as to make as snug a lit as may be desired.
Still another objectof my invention is to provide a union garment which may snugly -fit the wearer and yet which will permit him to bend forward or assume any desired position without discomfort.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved garment, showing the seat flap in the closed position, the flexible drawer members being shown in the fastened posh tion. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the garment, showing the seatflap in the closed position and the flexible drawer members unfastened. Fig. 3 is a side elevation show ing the seat flap in the open position. Fig. 4 is a View, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, showing the seatfiap in the closed position.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
1 indicates the shirt portion and 2 the drawer portion of the garment, the drawers having a seat flap 3, which is adapted to be dropped downwardly so as to uncover the seat opening -i, as shown in Fig. 3.
For drawing the seat flap 3 to and holding it in the closed position, shown in Figs.
1, 2 and i, I preferably provide flexible sup.
porting means attached to the free end of the seat flap, and comprising. two members which are secured to the upper or free end of the flap and which are adapted, when the flap hasbeen drawn to the closed po sition, to be extended around the waist line to the forward side of the garment, where the members 5 may be releasably secured in any suitable manner, as for example, bybeing tiedtogether. In'order that the flap 3 may be quickly drawn to the closed position, and reliably held in that position, I, preferably, provide the garment at opposite sides, adjacent to the waist line, with two guide holes 6, through which the members 5 respectively extend and through which said members may be drawn lengthwise to and fro. In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the members 5 extend from the flap 3 outwardly through the holes 6, so that the seat flap 3, when drawn to the closed position shown in Fig. 4E, and also in Figs. 1 and 2, will be disposed within the skirt 7 of the shirt portion 1. The free ends of the members 5, are provided with suitable stops, such as buttons 8, which are large enough to prevent the complete withdrawal of the members 5 through the holes 6, when the seatflap 3 is lowered to the open position shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to lower the flap 3, the members 5 are untied, and thereby released from each other, after which the flap may be quickly drawn down to the open position. To close the seat opening it is but. necessary to grasp the two members 5 and draw them upwardly and forwardly through the holes a. After the flap has been drawn to the closed position shown in Fig. I, the members 5 may be tied together or otherwise releasably secured.
I do not limit my invention tothe structure described and shown, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pateat is 1. A union garment comprising shirt and drawers, the drawers having a seat flap, the garment at opposite sides adjacent to the waist line having two guide holes, and flexi: ble means attached to the free end of said flap and extending therefrom into the shirt and thence through said holes. and movable lengthwise through said two holes for drawing the flap from the open position to and holding it in the closed position within the shirt.
2. A union garment comprising shirt and drawers, the drawers having a seat flap, the garment at opposite sides adjacent to the waist line being provided with supporting guides, and flexible means attached to the free end of said flap and engaging said guides for drawing the flap from the open position to and holding it 1n the normal closed position, Within the shirt.
3. A union garment comprising shirt and I drawers, the drawers hzn'ing a seat flap, and
attached to the free end of said fiapand eX- leading from said flap into the shirt and then outwardly through said two guide holes and movablelengthwise through said holes for drawing the flap to and holding it in the closed position within the shirt.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence or two subscribing witnesses.
