FRICTION-CLUTCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 9, 1914.
Application filed June 12, 1913. Serial N 0. 773,300.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joy, in the county of Mercer and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Friction- Clutch; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improved surface clutch adapted for use between a driving member and a driven member.
One of the features of the invention is'to construct the adjacent surfaces of the driving and driven members with inter-engaging bulges and depressions, one of the faces having a fiber friction piece, such as leather or the like riveted or otherwise secured to the surface.
The inter-engaging bulges and depressions afford clutching means between the driving and driven members.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation partly in section of the improved clutch. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the driving member. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the driven member. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the driving and driven members in the clutch, showing a portion of the driving member (which in the present instance is a portion of a balance wheel) in elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the driving member, which forms a part of any form of balance wheel 2 in the present instance, while 3 denotes the driven member, which in the present application is constructed with a sleeve 1. The sleeve 4 is splined to the shaft 5 by the key or feather 6, so as to rotate with the shaft 5 and slide thereon. Any suitable means (not shown) may be connected to the sleeve 4 in any suitable manner (not shown), whereby the sleeve 4 and the driven member 3 may be shifted upon the shaft 5, in order to bring the driven member in contact with the driving member. Riveted or otherwise secured to the face 7 of the driven member is a disk or fiber or other suitable material 8, thereby affording a more efficient positive clutching surface. The face 7 of the driven member is provided with depressions 9 and bulges 10, which depressions 9 gradually blend into a bridge or rib portion 11, which bridge or rib portion extends from one bulge to the other. However, the bridge or rib portion is slightly depressed, as shown clearly in Figs. i and 5. Owing to the face 7 being so formed the fiber disk likewise conforms thereto, the rivets or other means 12 and 13 acting to hold the disk to the driven member. The bulges and depressions of the fiber disks are designated by the characters 10 and 9, while the bridge of the fiber disk is designated by the character 11.
The driving member is provided with depressions 1 1 and bulges 15 which cooperate with the correspondingly shaped depressions and bulges of the driven member, there being a slight depression 16 between the bulges 15 for the reception of the bridge 11.
lVhen the driven member is shifted upon the shaft 5, the frictional surfaces of the driving and driven members will contact, and owing to the cooperating depressions and bulges, the driven member will positively rotate with the driving member as one body.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In combination, a driving member and a driven member, the driving member having a clutching surface, comprising alternately arranged depressions and bulges gradually blending from one to the other and arranged substantially centrally and axially of the surface, thereby constituting an undulated positive clutching surface, said clutching surface beyond said depressions and bulges gradually blending into an even peripheral edge, the driven member having a positive clutching surface shaped to correspondingly fit the clutching surface of the driving memher, and a fiber clutching surface piece shaped to fit the clutching surface of the driven member and secured thereto to insure positive clutching connections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HAROLD YOUNG.
