Application filed January 5, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID K. BRYSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsbnrg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pawl-and-Ratchet Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a pawl-and-ratchet has particular reference to that class of connections where one moving part is on the shaft and the other on the'pulley or similar revolving member.
The invention further contemplates a ratchet which shall be noiseless in operation; furthermore, to provide means whereby a pawl is in contact with the surface of the ratchet only when the same is in an operative relation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail ref-' erence is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional View of my improved device. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the spring frictiondisk used in this device. Fig. i is a detail elevation of a modified form of this device.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates the shaft, mounted in suitablebearings 2 and 3, and on which is secured the ratchet-wheel 4. This ratchet wheel may, however, be formed integral with the shaft 1. The pawl 5, pivotally secured to any suitable moving member 6, is provided with a pin 7,
spring friction-disk 9. This spring frictiondisk is formed, as before mentioned, with a slot 8 cut therein, and the spring members Serial No. 137,354.. on model.)
10 11 are pressed therefrom and extend outwardly a suitable distance beyond the surface of the disk. As shown in Fig. 2, this disk 9 is interposed between the hub of the moving member 6 and the ratchet 4:, the spring portions 10 11 forming a friction between said moving member and said ratchet. The pawl 5 being mounted on the moving member and having its pin 7 extending through the slot 8 of the disk 9 and said disk having a greater friction on the wheel 4 than on the hub of the moving member 6 will by a slight movement of either the shaft 1 or the moving member 6 in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1 cause the pawl to move toward the ratchet by means of the pin 7 being forced toward the center by the cam-slot 8.
It will be readilyseen that the reverse movement of either the shaft or the moving member will cause the pawl to be withdrawn from the ratchet for a suitable distance, said distance being regulated by the outer end of the shown in Fig. 4, operates practically the same as the before-mentioned mechanism, with the exception that in place of the pin and camslot a link 12, which is pivotally mounted on the friction-disk 13 and pawl 14, has been used. In this case the outward or inoperative position of the pawl 14 is regulated by the position of the stop-pin 15.
It will he noted that various slight changes and alterations may be made in the details of construction and combination of parts without departing from the general spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my inventiom what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pawl-and-ratchet connection, the
combination with a rotating movable member and apawl mounted on said movable member, of an independently rotatably movable member, a ratchet mounted on the said independent member, and means interposed between said pawl and said ratchet for causing the same to be disengaged when either of the said movable members is moved in one direcmember is driven, substantially as described. 1
3. In a pawl-and-ratchet connection, the combination with a rotating movable member, and a pawl mounted on said movable member, of an independently-movable member, a ratchet mounted on the said independent member, a member frictionally mounted adjacent said member carrying the ratchet, and connections between said pawl and fric tional member for causing the pawl to be engaged by or disengaged from the ratchet when either rotating member is moved in a given direction, substantially as described.
