Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Application filed September 22, 1913. Serial No. 791,188.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. STERLING, citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'licket-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ticket holders and more particularly to holders for car tickets and the like, the invention having for its primary object to provide a simple and novel device of this character whereby a single ticket may be easily and quickly ejected from the holder.
The invention has for another of its objects the provision of improved means for yieldably retaining the tickets withinthe case, and adjustable means mounted upon one end of the case, whereby the width of the outlet slot for the ticket may be varied in accordance with the thickness of said ticket.
My invention has for a more particular object to produce an improved double case construction embodying a yieldable partition wall which normally retains the tickets in the case and divides one class of tickets from another, but readily permits of the ejection of the tickets under pressure.
The invention has for a further object to provide an extremely efficient and durable device of this character which is highly convenient in practical use and may be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
\Vith the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrange ments of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of use of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section showing the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the body or case of the holder which is preferably constructed of sheet brass, though it will be apparent that other ticket.
sheet metals may be substituted if desired. The opposed walls of this case are provided with elongated openings (3 to receive the thumb or finger of the user.
7 designates a pair of spring plates which are substantially C(llliValUllt in width to the interior width of the case within which said plates are arranged. These plates are formed from a single metal plate bent intermediate of its ends and secured in any suitable manner at the longitudinal edges of such intermediate portion to the side walls of the case 5 at a point substantially midway between the top and bottom walls thereof as indicated at S. From their connected ends, the spring plates 7 g 'adually diverge and have their free ends disposed in contiguous relation to the top and bottom walls respectively of the case adjacent the oppo site end thereof. The adjustable members 9 extend transversely across this latter end of the case.
Each of said members has formed upon its ends the cars 10 which extend exterior-1y upon the side walls of the case. These ears are provided with vertical slots 11 to receive threaded studs fixed upon the side walls of the case. Suitable wing nuts 12 are threaded upon these studs for clamping engagement with the ends of the members 9. Between oach of the slotted walls of the ease and the opposed spring plates 7 a plurality of tickets indicated at T are adapted to be arranged. These tickets are inserted from the open end of the case which may then be closed by means of a suitable cap 13. The spring plates 7 hold the outermost ticket in engagement with the inner face of the ease wall. After arranging the tickets within the case in this manner, the members 9 are properly adjusted so as to produce the slots 14 at one end of the case which are equivalent in width to the thickness of a single Thus the ejection of only one ticket at a time is assured. By making provision for two separate and distinctpacks of tickets in the case body, as above explained, tickets of different characters or values may be expeditiously handled without liability of confusion or mistake.
From the tt'oregoing, it is believed that the construction and manner of operation of the illustrated forms of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. The device is very simple and may be produced at small manufacturing cost while at the sametime it is highly convenient and serviceable in practical use. The device is admirably adapted for carrying a large number of car tickets, or other tickets or coupons having a monetary value, and affords means whereby a single ticket may be easily and quickly delivered. The case when not in use may be carried in the vestpocket and effectively prevents the liability of loss of the tickets. While I have above described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of still further modifications and I therefore reserve the right to resort to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention, as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A ,ticket holder comprising a case pro- Vided in itsopposed walls with longitudinal slots, the opposite ends of said case being open, a resilient plate bent intermediate of its ends and arranged within said case, the intermediate portion of the plate being sesprings being disposed in opposed relation to H the respective slotted Walls of the case to yieldingly hold a plurality of tickets against each of said walls, independently transversely disposed adjustable plates mounted upon one ofthe open ends of the case to produce an exit slot contiguous to each of the slotted case walls which is substantially equivalent in width to the thickness of a single ticket, and a removable closure cap for the other end of said case. r In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
