- shear which'connct the draft 'yoke; with the draw-bar under heaghy'l'strains or blows.
To practically accompli object or re-- sult, and ifherein my nvention consists, I
' rovide the upper andilq l i er" limbs of the raft yoke on tll iir inner facesmith into figral projections through which the rear pertion of the front rivet 'hole-is"bored, throu h which the'frontportion of the rear rivet, ole is bored, and the draw-bar with slots on its'u per and lower faces prefer? ably of dovetail shape to receive said rojections or enlargements, thus materia ly in; creasing the bearing face of the draft yoke againstthe adjacent peripheral faces ofthe rivets, and making it necessary for a f-g tion of the draw-bar itself to be shear off before the rivets can shear. To adapt the draw-bar to receive a draft yoke of the o'rdinary construction, filler plates are provided which may be inserted in the transverse slots in the upper and lower faces of the draw-bar.
In the accompanying drawing forming apart'of this specification, Figure 1 is a p an. view. of a draw bar and draft yoke connection embodying my invention. Fig. 215 a side elevation; partly in crom section, on lineQf-Q of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan' viewl of the draw-bar with the draft oke removed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation o the drawbar'with the draft yoke removed. Fig.
- 5is a detailinner face view of one of the :limbs of thedraft' yoke; Fi 6 is a detail side. view'of one limb of t e draft yoke.
8. Fig. 10 is a. detail plan View of one of the filler plates and Fig. 11' is a detail section on l ne 1111 of Fig. 10. I
In the drawing, 1 represents a draw-bar and 2 the. draft yoke. The draw-bar preferably has the customary transverse grooves 3, 4 in ts upper and lower faces to receive. the bent-ends or-gibs-5 on the front ends of the draft yoke. The draw-bar is also prov ded on its upper and lower faces with transverse slots .6, 7, preferably of dovetail distancebetween the centers of the rivet holes 8, 9 in the draw-bar.
' The transverse slots 6, 7 are adapted to receive the integrallugs or projections 10, 11 on-the mner faces of the draft yoke limbs mg approximately tothe distance between the centers .of the rivet Holes 15, 16 in the draft yoke; which correspond and register with the rivet holes in the draw-bar. The front rivet ho1e'16 thus extends through the front end of the lugs or projections 10 and 11 and the rear rivet hole 15 extends through the-rear end portion of the lugs or pro ect ons 10 and 11, thus giving each limb of the draft yoke a more extended bearing 01; engagement with the adjacent peripheral .faces of the connecting rive and very greatly adding to thestren of the connection and practically preventing all possibihty of the connectlng rivets shearing as the rivet reinforcing lugs on the draft yoke draw-bar directly in front or rear of the forcing. lugs or projections 10 and 11 of the draft yoke fit.
To adapt the draw-bar for use in connection with an ordinary standard or Master Car Builders draft'yoke which does not have my rivet reinforcing lu provide dovetail filler p ates 17 which may be driven into the dovetail slots 6, 7 on the upper and lower faces of the draw-bar to fill up the slots or grooves 6, 7.- Each of the ller plates 17 is provided with front and rear semi-circular recesses 18, 19 to receive the :rivets 26 "In my invention. the rivet reinforcing lugs orprojcctions on the inner faces of the draft yoke limbs do not require to be accurately 13, 14,'the length-of these lugs correspondhave to shear off or else the portions of the or projections, I
Fig. 9 is a detail section on line 9-9 of Fig.
g d shapgj'gnd of a width corresponding to the transverse slots 6, 7 in which the rivet reinshaped or located, as the rivet holes are bored through these lugs or projections in drilling the yoke in the regular way from the outside to a templet or jig, the drill will cut the rivet engaging ends of make it accurately lit the adjacent walls of the rivets. c
With my invention, the faces or shoulders 20- on the memher l, and the corresponding times or shoulders 21 011 the lug 10, fit the sides of the rivets and are disposed on oppo site sides thereof. Since these faces or shoulders are formed by drilling, as previously described, they must accurately fit the rivets and it is apparent that it is unnecessary to have a correct fit between the walls'orshoulders 23 of the members 10, with the walls or shoulders 22- of the member 1. This construction results in a great pracsaving of labor and time and expense when. the parts are being assembled, and at the lug andthe same time produces a strong and accurate connection between the parts;
I'claim:- r
- In a draw-bar and draft yoke connection,
the combination witha, draw-bar having a pair or rivet holes and transverse slots in its opposite faces corresponding in width to the space between the centers of the rivet holes of a draft yoke having a pair of rivet hole: through its limbs and rivet reinforcinglugs on its inner faces through the extremities of which the inner or adjacentportions of th rivet holes extend, said rivet reinforcing lug: on the draft yoke limbs fitting in said'trens verse slots of the draw-bar, substantially-a specified.
