To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RoAcn, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Pullman station, Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Connections; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable connections.

The object of this invention resides in the provision of a connection which can be used to secure a swingle and double tree together, to connect two pieces of rope or chain or to perform any similar function without the aid of tools.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the class de scribed which can be applied or removed with very little trouble and in a minimum amount of time.

A. still further object is to so simplify the structure of devices of this character that they are strong and efficient in use and may be manufactured at a very low cost.

With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved connection with its sections partly separated, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved device, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention is shown as comprising a link formed of a pair of sections A and B, having certain of their ends fastened together as will be hereinafter set forth and having their other ends formed with laterally and inwardly bent tapered extensions 5 which coact to form one end of the loop.

The connection between the ends of the sections is procured by bifurcating one end of the section A and then directing the free ends of the furcations together and welding them to form an eye 6 and providing the outer end of the eye with a longitudinal bore 7 for receiving a laterally and backwardly bent extension 8 at the end of the section B, said extension being held with relation to the eye by a head 9 formed on the free extremity thereof. The free end portion of the extension 8 is straight so that the section B can rotate with relation to the section C so as to move the extensions 5 into and out of engagement.

In order to lock the member B at times against rotation with relation to the member A, that portion of the eye 6 adjacent the head 9 is provided with a transverse rectangular groove 10 and the sides of the head 9 are cut away as at 11 so that a slight longitudinal movement of the sections will seat the head in the groove and prevent relative rotation of the members. The bent extensions 5 of the sections are preferably bent toward each other so that when the loop is positioned in holding relation, the extensions will frictionally engage to hold the parts in relation, it being in this connection observed that tension at the ends of the loop only serves to hold its parts more seeurely in engagement. The outer end of the eye 6 is preferably directed slightly downwardly so that when the member B is rotated through an arc of 180 degrees it can be withdrawn through the bore 7.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple structure has been. provided which will eiliciently perform the functions required thereof.

What is claimed is:
