A. further object of the invention is to provide a whip o this character which will permit of the use of two whips of diierent sizes or kinds, which, in the event that one whip member is dispensed with, will permit the other whip member to be inclosed within the handle for convenience in storage or transit, and which is provided with simple and etective means 'for securing the whip member' or members to the handle.
The invention consists ot the features of construction, combination and arrangement oit parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, in which l liigure l is a sectional elevation of a whip embodying my invention, the whip handle appearing in longitudinal section. F ig. 2 is an enlarged detail. section through the outer end of the whip handle and the coupling sleeve.
Referring to the drawing, l designates the hollow handle et the whip, which is closed at its outer end and open at its inner end, the said open inner end of the handle being internally threaded to receive either one of the externally and oppositely threaded end portions 2 and 3 of a coupling sleeve 4. As shown, the end ot the sleeves iorm sockets of dii'ierent diameters to receive the correspondingly-sized tenons or butts of a pair of whip staves or members 5 and 6 which are adapted to be titted therein. Fig. 1 shows a whipl provided with a pair of such reversible whip staves or members, one et which, as the member 5, is inclosed in the handle, while the other, the member 6, projects outward for use. lt is obvious that the whip members may be reversed, so as to inclose the member 6 within the handle and dispose the member 5 'for use, so that in the Specification of Letters Patent.

event of the breakage et one whip member, a new one may be conveniently substituted therefor in an obvious manner. lt will also be seen that this construction enables a pair of whip members of different sizes or kinds, such as rigid and flexible whip members, to be used in connection with the same handle, and also permits of the substitution of new whip staves or members whenever the whip staff or staves in use are worn out or injured.
llVhile the construction shown is designed for the use of a pair ot whip staves in connection with a single handle, it will, of course, be understood that but a single whip statt need be employed, which., when the whip is not in use, may be stored within the handle for convenience in packing` and transporting the whip as a whole.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the 'construction and mode olf use of my improved whip will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a device of this character is provided which embodies substantial advantages, and which may be made as ornamental as desired.
lt will also be seen that by reversely threading the coupling sleeve 1-, and providing sockets of diiliierent diameters in the opposite ends thereof, the operator may readily determine which end of the coupling member is in position to receive a certain kind or size ol.E whip without confusion, the seclrets also serving as gages by which whips et different kinds or designed for use in connection with a particular handle may be easily and convenientlyT selected from a large stock. lt will further be seen that by providing` the reversible coupling member with sockets et different sizes, whips of relatively different degees of flexibility, as -for riding` and driving, may be used in connection with one and the same handle, and that different styles ot' whips for the use of dog and horse fanciers may also be employed in connection with a single handle.
l claim As a new and improved article of 1nanufacture, a whip comprising a hollow handle closed at one end and open and internally threaded at its opposite end, a reversible coupling member provided with reverse eX- ternal threads on opposite sides et its transverse center' for interchangeable engagement with the threaded end et the handle, said coupling member being provided with a oonfor use and the other stored in the hollow 10 tlnuous bore formingsockets of different dihandle.
