Be it known that 1, JOHN SnANns, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of (ireat Britain and Ireland, and residing at Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovel ment in Waste and Overflow Fittings, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invent-ion relates to waste and over i'low fittings for baths, lavatories, sinks and the like, and has for its object to provide a. fitting such that the discharge valve shall be operable both manually and automatically-manually when it is desired to discharge entirely the contents of the bath, lavatory or the like, and automatically in case the water in the bath, lavatory or the like should exceed a predetermined level, such automatic discharge being limited to the extent necessary to restore the said predetermined level.
In the accompanying drawings Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections illustrating alternative constructions embodying the invention.
The same reference letters denote similar parts in the two views.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1, 3 represents the movable discharge valve element, the said valve element being constituted by a flexible diaphragm and accommodated in a casing at both the upper and lower portions of which are in communication with the outlet pipe 5 of a bath A, lavatory or the like, the lower portion of said casing 4; being formed with a seat (3 adapted to cooperate with a yielding valve face 7 on the underside of said diaphragm. Secured to the said valve 3 and disposed substantially coaxial with the discharge pipe 8 a pipe connection 9 which uprises within an also coaxial upwardly extending tubular portion 10 of the casing at suitably supported by the upper roll or shelf of the bath A. The said pipe connection 9 is provided at its upper extremity with a cap 11 arranged so as to afford a narrow annular opening 12 affording communication between the interior of the said pipe connection 9 and the tubular portion 10; Connected to said pipe connection 9 is a rod 13 extending through the upper shelf or roll of the bath, and fitted with a handle 14. It will be seen that when the handle 14L is raised the valve 3 will be lifted off its seat 6 so that the contents of the bath, lavatory or the like may be discharged by way of the outlet pipe :3 and the discharge pipe 8.
f As above stated, the space within the casing a above the valve 53 is in communication with the outlet pipe 5 so that when the valve 3 is on its seat Water may pass into the casing t and upwardly within the tubular portion 10 to the level of a perforation 15 in the side wall of the bath, a connection between which and the interior of the tubular port-ion 10 is afforded by a short tubular connection 16. As shown, the said perforation 15 is but slightly below the level of the cap 11. In case the level of water in the bath should rise above the said perforation 15 to the level of the cap 11 and pass between the cap and the pipe connection 9, siphonic action will be initiated and in consequence of the relief of pressure on the upper side of the diaphragm the valve is lifted so that the contents of the bath will be discharged until the water level again falls to the said perforation 15 Whereupon, on account of the passage of air through the short tubular connection 16, siphonic action will be interrupted.
As appears from the drawing, the construction in many respects similar to that described in the specification of my co-pending application for Letters Patent No. 755,190.
In the alternative construction shown in l? 2, the rod 13 accommodated in a stand pipe 17 communimting with the interior of the casing at and preferably e. tending to the shelf or roll of the bath.
in order that the automatic action of the valve may not be interfered with by the provision of the manually operable connection, provision made for a certain amount of lost motion between the valve and the rod 13. To this end the lower end of the rod 13 is formed as a ring surrounding the pipe connection 9 and slidable between two limiting positions determined by collars 18 on said pipe connection 5). The construction shown in. Fig. 2 is in other respects substantially similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
it will be understood that the perforation in the side wall of the bath is situated at that level to which in practice the water in the bath will be permitted to attain, the

lVhat I claim is 1. The combination with a liquid-containing receptacle having an outlet connection presenting a valve seat, a casing in communication with said outlet connection, a
said casing and adapted to cooperate with said valve seat, said valve exposed to the pressures in said casing and said receptacle, a siphon constituted by two pipes one within the other, the outer pipe being in communication with the upper part of said casin and the inner pipe being connected to a tubular connection between the outer pipe and a point in the receptacle above the outlet connection, and a manually operable device for lifting said valve.
2; The combination with a liquidcontaining receptacle having an outlet connection presenting a valve seat, a casing in communication with said outlet connection, a
valve formed as a diaphragm fitted within said casing and adapted to cooperate with said valve seat, said valve exposed to the pressures in said casing and said receptacle,
a siphon constituted by two pipes one Within the other, the outer pipe being in communication with the upper part of said casing and the inner pipe being connected to and passing through said valve, a tubular connection between the outer pipe and a point in the receptacle above the outlet connection, and a manually operable device for lifting said valve, the connection between said device and said valve being such as to allow for a certain amount of lost motion between said device and said valve.
