To whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ALBERT F. Gun, of Eastmanville, in the. county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Elas- 'tic Adjustable \Vagon-Tongue Supporters; and I do The invention consistsiu securing a jack under the tongue, in such a manner that the elevation of the tongue may be adjusted as desired, and in a spring secured to the outcr end of the jack and under thetongne, in such a manner as to sustain the latter, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective, as above described.

A represents a triangular-shaped jack, the base' of which is secured by suitable eye-bolts a, or in any other convenient manner to' the axle B.

. Two other eye-bolts, b, suspended from the rod or bolt (1, by means of which the tongue 0 is pivoted to the hounds D, pass down tbroughthe jack, and these bolts are provided with nuts 71, by means of which any desired elevation of the tongue may be obtained.

A bolt, 76, projecting downward from the tongue passes throughthe outer end of this jack, and is also provided with a nut, h, for the purpose set forth in the preceding paragraph and to govern the tension of the spring.

Between the tongue and outer end of the jackis placed the spring E to give an elastic support to the tongue.

In case. the tongue is coupled to the axle by means of eye-bolts, the jack is passed through the staples on the under side of the axle, and secured to the lower side of the snag-bar by means of bolts, receiving the spring at any desired pointon the tongue.

When it is applied to a sleigh by means of staples in the forward bench, the jack may pass either over or under the roll, as may be desired, and the spring be applied at any required point on the tongue.

By the employment of this device the forward part i of the wagon never gets that slant backward, whereby many upper sway-bars or circles are broken and sprung out of place, and, when another reach is inserted, it never tips up with the points of the bounds downward, which is a great annoyance when one is in a hurry, all wear is ren'ioved from the breast-straps of the harness, thereby saving much expense, there is no pressure upon the neck of the animals, and consequently sore necks and polc-evil are avoided; and the team will not have that nodding movement of their heads, which is often caused by the weight of the pole or tongue on the'top of the neck.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 The combination, in a wagon-tongue supporter, of the jack A, the eye-bolts b, secured by the nuts 11, the rod (1, the eye-bolts a, secured to the axle B, and the spring E, secured to the tongue 0 by means of the bolt 7:, having a suitable not, all constructed and arranged substantially'as shown and described.
