Description

aan sara taint dita PHILIP PRICE, 0F WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 109,663, dated November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOW-CASES.
- The Schedule referred .to in these Letters Patent and making peut of the same.
Description ofthe Accompanying Drawing.
Figure'l is a vertical sectionot a revolving showcase with my improvement.
Figure 2, a section on the line 1 2, tig. l.
Figure 3 a view, showing the case arranged so as to turn upon and be'raised or lowered by an adj ustable pivot.
General Description.
The case A consists of anannular base, a, to which are connected upright rih's'b, supporting an annular top, consisting of wings c c, connected by inclined radial ribs d d.
Between the -ribs l) b are fitted curved panes of glases e e, which extend from the base to the top of .the case, and between the rings c cand ribs d are-insel-ted panes of glass g. l
The case rcsts on rollers i, so that it can be turned round a stationary cylindrical pillar B, which is secured to the base or table x, and, in the/present` in-` stance, is hollow, formed 'in a vessel, B, of metal, glass, or other material, andwhich extends to or above the ring c, and is provided .with'a detachable cap:
Upon brackets h on the ribs b, and on lugs on vertical rods m, rest annular shelves o, which may be*v of glass or other material, and surround 'the vessel B, but are not in Contact with the same, and from the lower end of the said vessel extends a pipe, p, which may be provided at the end with a suitable cock.
It is well known ,that in ordinary show-cases many articles, suclr' as fruit, butter, meats, Sto., vcannot be maintained for a, long time on exhibition, especially during warm weather or in heated apartments, in consequence of the perishable nature of these articles.
By my improvement the articles may be preserved for any desired length of time, and, at the same time, may be so disposed for exhibition as to afford every opportunity for thoroughly inspecting them.
lhe articles to be exhibited are arranged upon the shelves o, and the vessel B is lled with ice-,or with any suitable freezing mixture which will maintain the interior of the case at such a low temperature that no deleterious change can take place in its contents. The water resulting from the melting of the ice may be withdrawn through the pipe p, and the vessel may be replenished after removing the topf. rIhe case may be provided with suitable doors for the introduction and removal of the articles, or it may be made as shown, the articles being placed on the shelves before the case is placed over the vessel Instead of supporting the case on rollers it may have a central pivot at the top, bearing ou the top of the vessel B, and this pivot may be adjustable, so that the case may be lowered to rest upon the table, or raised so as to revolve round the central Vessel B. For this purpose a pivoted screw, x, g. 3, turning in the top oi' the case and bearing on the lar, may be used.
It will be seen that in consequence' of the support afforded bythe central cylinder B, the frame of the case may he made verylight, and yetbe strong enough to sustain the contents. Extremely light and ornamental cases may thus be made for exhibiting jewelry and other articles, a solid pillar taking the place of the vessel B.
It will be obvious that the form of the case may be varied to any extent, that it may be stationary or may be revolved by clock-work or other motor, and` that the ice-receptaclemay be constructed and arranged in anyl manner required' by the construction fof the case'or the character of the articles to be exhibited l and preserved.
Claims.
1. A ca se, B, containing ice or a freezing mixture, and arrapged Within a case, constructed as set forth, for the exhibition of perishable articles.
2. The combination of the upright B, securedto a base, X, a show-case revolving round said upright, and an adjustable pivot, x, secured to said case and bearing on the upright, so that by adjusting .said pivot the case may be raised from or caused to rest on the base, .all as described.
In testimony whereof,I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing-witnesses. f l.
PHILIP PRICE.
