Description
WILLIAllIPORTER, OF ST; STEPHENS-PARISH, CANADA.
Letters Patent No. 109,660, dated November 29, 1870.
IMPAROVEMENT IN MATCHES FOR CIGAR-LIGHTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM lolrrnn, of St. Stephens Parish, in the'province of New Brunswick and in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method and Meansuscd for securing together and protecting the friction-ends of Matches; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, aInd exact description thereof.
Heretofore, matches intended for use in lighting cigars have been packed in boxes, in order to confine them within a suitable compass, and also to protect the composition with which their ends were coated, by which means the cost of said lights to the consumer was largely increased,
'lo obviate this objection is the design of m yinvention, which consists in protecting the friction-ends of matohes, and also in securing said ep ds togetherby' lights or matches, which are thereby securely held together, and also are protected from injury while being handled. \Vh'en a light is desired for use, the tissue-paper offers but a slight resistance to its removal from the bunch.
When it is desired to put up the matches singly or disconnected from each other, their ends are severally covered with a small piece of the gummed paper, which, for convenience, may be cut from the sheet by means of a round punch. Y
By this method of confining and protecting the matches, an equal degree of security and convenience is obtained at but a fraction of the expense heretofore required for such purpose. v
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, 7
What I claim as new is- The'mode herein described for protecting the friction-e'nds of matches, and also securing said ends together my means. of gummed tissue-paper or Itsequivalent, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of November, 1870.
-WM. PORTER. [L. s.]
