UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. WEBB, F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ADVERTISING-SIGN.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AdvertisingSigns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising signs adapted to be fixed to trolley or electric light posts and has for its objects means for displaying time tables, advertisements and like notices; the protection of the notice mounted in the sign against injury and also illegibility by reason of the weather; the prevention of the accumulation of water or ice upon the parts of the frame; the security of the sign in its position in the frame under all circumstances; adaptability of the frame to posts of varying sizes; and the attainment of these ends in a structure that is portable, inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction and which affords a ready means for substitution of notices when desired. To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification; Figure 1 is a front view of my sign applied to a post, portions of the latter bein broken away, Fig. 2, a rear elevation of t e same, Fig. 3, a section of the sign on line 'ww of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4:, and 6, sections respectively on lines acre, oy and as of Fig. 1. The post is omitted from Figs. 5 and 6, and the removable band from Fig. 5.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My invention is shown applied to a pole 1 which is preferably a trolley or electric light pole. To this my sign is attached. This comprises an oblong body 2 composed of resilient sheet metal, transversely curved, and substantially C-shaped in cross section. The upper edge of the plate or body is bent outwardly and downwardly forming an exterior depending flange 3 and a resultant recess 4. intermediate the body and the flange portion of the member 2. The side or longitudinal edges of the member 2 are outwardly folded forming exterior flanges 5 substantially parallel with the face of the member 2 and forming cavities 6 intermediate the flanges and body portion. The flanges 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

and 5 form retaining means for the top and sides of the strip 8 whose margins are within the cavities 41 and 6. The strip 8 is preferably composed of weatherproof paper or fabric and constitutes the sign portion proper of my device. At an intermediate portion of the strip 8 are divisions 9 adapted to receive time table notices, and above and below the portions 9 are spaces 10 adapted to receive advertisements or other legends. The lower portion of the strip 8 is attached to the body 2 by a removable arcuate metallic strap 12 which conforms to the contour of the body and is located exteriorly of its face, and whose ends extend within the cavities 6 beneath the flanges 5. The strap is spaced from the strip 8 by means of bosses 14 upon its inner face, or by nuts. The member 12 is engaged to the member 2 by screws or bolts 15 passing through the strip and body and through the lower margin of the strip 8. Upon the ends of the screws 15 may be nuts or bosses 20. If these members are bosses they will be integral with the inner faces of the body 2. At intervals near the upper inner margin of the body 2 are flat bosses or projections 21. The bosses 20 and 21 are adapted to contact with the surface of the post and are purposed to space the body from the post so that the water clescending upon the post has an outlet intermediate the post and the body and by being permitted to flow in such a course does not accumulate to form ice.
Fixed by rivets 23 or otherwise to the innor faces of the rear margins of the member 2, near its top and bottom are curved clamping arms 24 with parallel outwardly bent portions or lugs 25 provided with central perforations 26 adapted to receive a bolt or screw 27 having upon its end a nut 28 by which screw connection arms 24- may be drawn together or expanded to assist in accommodating the resilient body 2 to different sized posts.
By removing the screws 15 and the plate 12 the display strip 8 of the sign may be removed and another substituted in its'place. The bosses 14. insure a spacing of the member 12 from the strip 8 so as to permit the free passage of water from the strip.
IV hat I claim is 1. In a sign, a transversely curved body provided with marginal recesses on its front face, a flexible strip held in said recesses, means connecting the sides of said body for attaching it to a support, and a removable arcuate strip retaining member conforming to the contour of said body and located across the front face thereof with its ends extended within said recesses.
2. In a sign, a transversely curved body provided with marginal recesses on its front face, a flexible strip held in said recesses, means connecting the sides of said body for attaching it to a support, a removable arcuate strip retaining member conforming to the contour of said body and located across the front face thereof with its ends extended within said recesses, and means interposed between said arcuate member and said strip for spacing said parts.
3.7111 a sign, the combination of a transversely curved body portion provided with exterior marginal recesses, a strip of waterproof material upon the outer face of the body extending into the recesses, a strap exterior of the strip having its ends in the recesses, projections upon the inner face of the strap bearing against the flexible strip, and attaching screws in the strap passing through the strip and the body.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. WEBB.
