MONKEY-WRENCH.
noemen,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
To all iii/om it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GZA SZILGYI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of Gary, county of Lake, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey-lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in monkey wrenches and has for its object the provision of such a wrench which is provided with improved means for quickly adjusting the movable aw thereof.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of a wrench embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a top plan view corresponding to Fig. l, and Fig. 3, a section taken on line .cc-:c of F ig. l.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a shank l in the form of a flat metallic strip which is provided at one end with a suitable handle 2 and at the other end with a head 3 fixed the-reto and projecting from each side thereof to form fixed jaws 1i. A movable head 5 is perforated centrally to slide on shank l and also projects from each side thereof to form movable jaws G cooperating with the fixed jaws Ll to engage a nut, as will be readily understood. A locking arm 7 is pivotally mounted at each side of head 5 and is provided at its free end with teeth S adapted to engage corresponding teeth 9 provided in the corresponding edge of shank l. A thumb piece or operating member l0 is slidably mounted on shank l and is provided with buttons or projections ll adapted to facilitate operation thereof. This thumb piece carries pivoted links 12 connecting it to the free ends of arms 7 on each side of shank l, said links being pivotally connected with said thumb piece by means of a common rivet 13 which extends through a slot le in shank l. Each of the arms 7 carries a stop pin l2 adapted to limit the swing of the corresponding links l2 and thus preserve the operative relation between the parts.
The arrangement is such that when movable head 5 approaches thumb piece 10, or
vice versa, the free ends of arms 7 are drawn into engagement with the toothed edges of shank l with the outer rounded edges of arms 7 engaging the converging surfaces l0 in thumb piece l0 locking the device in operative condition. Thus the greater strain upon either of the jaws 6 tending to force it away from the corresponding jaw 4L the tighter the teeth 8 will be engaged with the teeth 9. When it is desired to adjustthe jaws 6, all that is necessary is to mo-ve said thumb piece away from said jaws or vice versa, whereupon the teeth in arms 7 will be disengaged from teeth 9 by action of links l2, as will be readily understood. This constitutes a simple and effective construction for the purpose and will be found to be durable and highly efficient in use.
lVhile l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modiiications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A wrench comprising a shank having teeth thereon; a fixed jaw on said shank; a movable jaw slidably mounted on said shank; an arm pivoted at one end to said movable jaw and its other end provided with teeth engaging the teeth of said shank; a thumb piece slidably mounted on said shank and operatively connected with said arm; and means carried by said thumb piece adapted to facilitate locking of said teeth together, substantially as described.
Q. A wrench comprising a shank having teeth thereon; a fixed jaw on said shank; a movable jaw slidably mounted on said shank; an arm pivoted at one end to said movable jaw and its other end provided with teeth engaging the teeth of said shank; a thumb piece slidably mounted on said shank and having a portion adapted to engage the outer edge of the toothed end of said arm when said teeth are in mesh; and a link connecting said thumb piece with said arm, substantially as described.
3. A wrench comprising a shank; a fixed to :mld movable jaw, substantially as cle- 1G scribed.
l'n testimony whereof l have signed my nume 'to this specification in. ille presence of two subscribing witnesses.
