Description

E. L. AMES.
CAN OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 17,1913.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
awe/14 601,
b w m m w EARL LYON'S AMES, OF SAN B EBNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.
' elm-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed July 17, 1913. Serial No. 779,597.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EARL L. AMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Bernardino, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact de-,
ans or any other cans having contents of such nature as to require small openings only to provide for the removal of the contents of a can.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character consisting of pivoted jaws, one
of which is arranged to engage the rim of a sharpened Point ad p to Punch an Opencan, the other of which is provided with a ing in the can.
A further important object of my inven' tion is to provide a device of the above mentioned character constructed of few parts, reliable in its operation, and cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a partof this application. I
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my can opener in its operative position showing the upper corner of the can in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the pivoted jaws of my can opener, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the j awsshowing the spaced relationship thereof.
Referring now to the drawing, the numerals land 2 designate crossed handles that are plvotally connected in any desired way, as indicated at 3. Each of the pivoted handles 1 and are provided terminally withfingerengagmg portions 3 and 4 similar to the type employed in connection with scissors or shears. Forwardly of the pivot 3 the handles 1 and 2 comprise jaws 5 and 6. The jaw 5 is curved, as shown, and projects beyond the extremity of the jaw 6.- The end of the jaw 5 is reduced to provide a-punch 7 having a sharpened point 8. The jaw 6 is curved toward the jaw 5 and is engaged, as indicated at 8, and provided at its extremity with a beveled face 9 which is adapted to engage the rim 10 formed on the upper portion of a can, designated as an entirety by the numeral 11, during the operation of punching a hole in the top of the can.
In operation,'the beveled face 9 of the enlarged portion 8 on the jaw 6 is placed into engagement with the rim 10 of the can 11 and the handles 1 and2 are operated so as to cause the jaw 5, having the punch 7 formed thereon and provided with a sharpened point 8, to be inserted through the top of the can and thereby form an opening.
It is apparent with reference to the drawing and description that a device is provided which is adapted to accomplish all the functions that are herein recited.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet, realizing that the conditions concurrent wit-h the adoption of my device Will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention,
l l l tapered to a point and vdisposed approxiof the handles and being disposed in spaced mately at right angles to the handle, and relation-to said prong inwardly thereof. 10 the other of said handles being extended for- In testimony whereof I aifix my signature Wardly of the pivot and disposed at apin presence of two witnesses.
.3 proximately 1 right angles to the handles, EARL LYONS AMLES said last named right angular portion being Witnesses: flattened, and chamfered at its free edge, M. T. AMos, said chamfered edge disposed transversely I. D. S'rooK'roN.
