Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 18, 1918. Serial No. 267,270.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE E. PERRIER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Mattawa, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can- Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to can openers, the object in view being to provide a simple and efficient can opener which is'permanently attached to a can thereby particularly adapting the can opener for tourists, campers and other: who are not obliged to carry along a special or separate can opener which i liable to hecomelost or misplaced.
Another object of the invention is to provide a can opener which is folded in relation to the can when not in use and which will not interfere with the compact shipping and storage of the cans nor the close arrangement of said cans upon the shelves in stores and storage depots.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the can opener shown in its applied relation to a can and folded.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the can with the opener removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section showing the can opener folded in relation to the can.
Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the can in its operative or useful position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section illustrating the joint between the handle and the body of the can opener.

The can opener contemplated in this in vention comprises, in the preferred embodiment thereof, a radius bar 1 which constitutes the main body of the device, and an extension bar or piece 2 which is connected to the radius bar 1 by means of a hinge 3. The hinge 3 occurs immediately adjacent to the edge of the can as shown in Fig. 1 thus enabling the extension piece or bar 2 to lie snugly against the side of the can as shown in the same figure. The top of the can is formed with a de ression or recess 45 to receive the radius ar 1 and permit the same to lie flush with the top of the can. If desired the side of the can may be formed with a recess to receive and house the extension bar or piece 2.
Connected to the extension bar 2 and extending outwardly therefrom, in the use of the device, is a handle 6 having an enlarged end flange or head 7 to enable a firm grasp to be obtained thereon. The handle 6 is connected to the extension piece or bar 2 by means of a hinge 8 of the knuckle joint type embodying stop shoulder 9 for sustaining the handle 6 at a right angle to the extension piece 2.
When not in use, the handle 6 lies close to the can as shown in Fig. 1.
11 designates a cutter or cutting blade which is connected to the radius bar 1 by means of a hinge 12 and is brought to its operative position by means of a spring 13 arranged adjacent to the hinge joint as shown. When the device is folded the cutter 11 lies against the bottom of the radius bar 1 and upon the top of the can. As soon however, as the device is slightly lifted, the spring 13 thrusts the cutter into operative position, the cutter being then forced downwardly through the top of the can. The device as a whole is connected to $1e top of the can by means of a pivot 15 which is shown in the form of a rivet.
The manner of operating the can opener may be described as follows The handle 6 is first grasped and moved outwardly to a position at a right angle to the extension bar 2 and the handle is then pushed upwardly until said extension bar 2 lies in the same plane as the radius bar 1. The other end of the device as a whole is then lifted sufficiently to enable the spring 13 to move the cutter 11 to a position at a right angle to the radius bar. This positions the point of the cutter directly against the top of the can about one-ei hth of an inch from the edge thereof. lDownward pressure is then exerted upon the outer end of the radius bar until the cutter has penetrated and punctured the can. Then the handle 6 is moved in a circular path causing the cutter 11 to cut through the can in a circular path until the top of the can has either been entirely severed or partially severed sufficiently to enable the same to be bent upwardly and backwardly in order that the contents of the can may be removed. If desired, the

The combination with a can, of a can opener embodying a radius bar pivotally attached to the top of the can at a central point, an extension bar hinged to the outer end of said radius bar and movable to an arc of substantially ninety degrees, an operating handle hinged to said extension bar and adapted to be swung to an arc of substantially ninety degrees and a spring pressed cutter, having a hinged connection with said radius bar adjacent to the edge of the can.
