Description
este effet,
, ALBERT H. LAW, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 109,429, dated Novemberj22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-THIMBLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and, making part of the une.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H LAW, of the city and county of San Francisco, Stateof California, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Thimbles; and 1 do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suiiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements, without further invention or exper iment.
My invention relates to an improvement'in coml mon sewing-tbilnbles, such as are used to protect the finger in forcing needles through articles being sewed. Then the ordinary thimble is used, the end of the finger upon which the thimble is worn after. a. time ing forming a part of this specification, in which-` A' represents 'a thimble of' the ordinary construetion, having a portion, B, eut away, as shown, leaving a suicient width of metal between the top of the thimble and upper end oi' the cut, to serve for pre venting the needle Afrom coming in contact with the finger-nail while sewing.
The shape -of the portion cut away is immaterial, but it should only extend around one-half of its circumference, soas to leave the line where the fingernail and the iesh joins exposed, when the thimble s on the wearer. A
A rim, a, is made around the edge of this cut, in the ordinary manner, to prevent the needle from slippingof the thimble.
Around the lower portion or large end of the thim ble I make two clasps, b, which willeneircle the finger upon veach side below the ,linger-nail, and hold the thimble in place b'y claspng around the finger.
I am aware a patent was granted to J. E. McBeth August 4, 1868, for a thimble with a series of openings around its sides above a solid ring or base, through which openings the front of the iingerlnightpress until it was made sore; therefor-el do not claim a thimble with a series of openings on the side, as shown and described in said patent; but
What I do claim, is-
A thimble, with a single opening on the back, above an open base,'and with a full side to support the front of theforejiuger, substantially as described. l
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ALBERT H. LAW. [n. 5.]
