Description
lili WAND() C. KENDALL, 0F HARTFORD, WISCONSIN, ASSGNOR TD Hill@ SELF AND GILBERT l. DARNEY, 0F SAME PLAGE.
` Letters Patent No."i09,421, dated November 22, 1870.
lMPROVEMENT IN MQPHHEADS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom. yit may concern v Be it known that I, FERNANDO C. KENDALL, of Hertford, in the county of Washington and Stat-e of Wisconsin, have invented certa-in new and useful Im proveniente in ll'lop-Hendsg and I do herebydeolare the following to be u full, clear, nud exact description ofthe sinne, reference being hed to the accompanying drawing forming part oi' this specification, in which- Figure l is u side elevation 'of my improved mophead, und' Figure 2 is nu end elevation of the saune.'
Similar letters of reference in the drnwiuu indicate corresponding parte.
My invention hasfcr its object to provide un infn proved mop-heudg und lt consists in the peculiar construction of ihe suine, which l will now proceed to describe in detail.
ln the drewing-m A is the .top or main bemhe bend, adapted for ut-l teehiuent to suitable handle by means ofi-he screw*-` shnnlr B.
C i) are the end pieces of Athe heed, each forming n loop to receive and guide the roilers D E, :ind the pressurebers F G.
The lower roller l) is composed of wood, nud has its bearings in the estreme iower ends oi the loops 0.--
'lhe upperroiler E is covered with Indio rubber, nud rests upon the roller D, with its slm-ft entering the loop C.
(Pue und o anis shaft forms n crunk-handle, H, by which the ro' E s operated. A
F is the lower pressure-bar, adopted to slide freely upon the loops J, which poss through eyes I formed et euch end of said bnr.
It is nlso provided, at euch end, with n `lnteral arm, J, which projects downward between the arms of. the loops, to bear upon the journals of the upper roller E.
G is the upper pressurehar, fitted upon the loops G in ou manner similar to the lower bar, and adopted to receirethe pressure of the set-screws K, which pues through the top ber of the mop-heed.
L are spirnl springs, held between the pressurebzirs by menus of projections m, formed upon the lutter; as shown.
My improved mop-heed is operated inthe following,r
manner: v
The mop-cloth is first placed between the rollers, und the set-.screws K turned down te compress the springs, the pressure oi which is exerted upon the `may be changed; but it is pre'ernbie to ,arrange shaft of the upper roller, through the medium of the lower pressure-bnr and its letterala-rms J.
By the arrangement of the two pressurebars und springs, the pressure upon the upper roller is rendered uniform,`nud the mop-cloth held securely in pince et each end of the head.
Then it is desired to wring the cloth, the crankhandle H is turned in one direction, and then iu the opposite direction, to express the wuter from each end ofthe cloth. It is finally turned iu the rst direction, to bring the center of the cloth in Contact with the rollers, in which position it is again ready for use.
By'the employment of therubher-covered roller, in connection with the wooden roller, the operation oi 'wringing the cloth is greatly facilitated, inasmuch as the friction upon the rubber is greater than upon the wood, and also from the l'nct that the addition of the rubber incr-enses the diameter ol' the upper roiler. Y As this roller isthe one opera-ted bythe crank r. dle to wrinf,r the cloth, it is evident that its 'li upon the lett-er should be grentertban the lower which simply furnishes n support or guide for the elf lf desired, however, the position of the two ro as shown, because the orn-ulohnudie is thus ce.; upward along the cud of the niopdzend, und out oi contacuwith the surface to be moppcd'.
Having thus described my invention,
What L claim :is new therein, mid desire to secure by Letters Potent, is 1. The eombinntion, with uPmop-head, :is herein de scribed, oi' :i wooden`roller and nu ludinrubbei,'-cov ered roller, substantially :is described, furthe purpose specified.
2. vin combination with the main bor A,looped ends (l, und rollers l) E, the adjustable spring pressure-hars F G, constructed substantially :is described, for the purpose specified.
3. The iuophend, consisting of the moin bei' A, looped ends (l, rollers ll.) E, cromkdiandle H, springs L, and adjustable pressure-hors F G, ull constructed :is described, for the purpose specified,
yhe above specification of my invention signed by me this doy of September, 1870.
.FERNANDO C KENDALL.
